iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

I love it when someone who recently joined the forum with 4 points, tells someone who has been on the forum for over a decade and knows the forum managers personally, what Apple does or doesn't do here.

You are wrong. The people you hope are reading your posts are NOT here. If you want to tell Apple your thoughts where it will be heard you should do one or more of the following:

  1. Provide feedback via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Call Apple
  3. Use the Contact Support button at the top of this page
  4. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show them the issue you're having

Otherwise, it is you who is wrong about Apple paying attention here.

I was having the same issue where I had to reboot my phone in order to use a wireless charger. Apple support was able to help me resolve the issue, at least it appears to be resolved (it’s only been one day so far). This is what Apple support had me do.

  1. Press the volume up button once (only this button should be pressed)
  2. Press the down button once (only this button should be pressed)
  3. Press and hold the power button until the phone automatically shuts off (only this button should be pressed and ignore the power off slider and keep the button pressed until the phone automatically shuts off)
  4. Turn the phone back on and charging works repeatedly.

I hope this works for others too.

Time will say. Resetting network setting did nothing for my Mophie 3 in 1 charger.

Basically, my situation is:

  1. Mophie 3 in 1 stand, iPhone 12 Pro won't charge with Apple silicon case on it, it will charge without it. This charger used to charge iPhone XS with silicone case without any issues
  2. Logitech QI charger - no issues
  3. Samsung QI charger - no issues

It's hard to imagine hardware issue. If one Apple certified charger doesn't work properly anymore with MagSafe Phone / Case, I believe many other chargers using the similar coil alignment or charging chip may not work either, that's why the results are mixed across the board. For "stand" type chargers or the one where your phone is in fixed position, such issues can be more pronounced.

People talk about QI charging tech being old etc. It's old but Apple has changed charging design dramatically for 12, it literally added extra magnets, so it's not 1:1 comparison anymore.

I'll test my wife's phone on Mophie 3 in 1 charger once she gets to it and it may help isolate it better.

Anyway, if it's software - Apple will fix it. If it's defect on some units, Apple will replace the units. If it's a design flaw, may need to find the chargers that work for you.

I was very disappointed that none of my FOUR Qi chargers worked, representing three different companies. However, all is not lost, I tried this method and now they all work. Your chargers are fine, even the phone is OK, but since so many of us seem to have this problem, there’s definitely a glitch somewhere.

Do this exact method...don’t do the “normal” power on/off of the phone.

  1. Press and quickly release volume up button
  2. Then press and quickly release volume down button
  3. Then press and KEEP HOLDING side power button (keep holding past the swipe to shut down) until you see the Apple Logo, then let go.

Again, this worked for me and everything’s fine now.

Good luck, everyone. This was frustrating, but it’s all good now, especially since my magsafe charger hasn’t even shipped yet, so I was stuck with lightening cables. Still waiting on USBC, but that’s a whole different conversation.

After any iOS update, it's advisable to Force Restart your phone:

  • Press and quickly release volume up button
  • Then press and quickly release volume down button
  • Then press and keep holding the side power button (keep holding past the swipe to power off) until you see the Apple Logo, then let go

Normal wireless charging should be restored when you sign back in to your phone.

Since the beginning of the thread

  • There are people who have tried to turn off that setting and failed
  • There are people who have various chargers types which work only to stop working at the next charging session
  • There are people who can hard reset in order to get the phone to charge wirelessly again only to have it fail again hours or days later
  • There are people who can soft reset for the same effect.
  • There are people who need to do both a hard reset and a soft reset.
  • There are people who bought a new puck (like they should have to with a phone that didn’t come with one) which fixed their issue.

This is a firmware problem by process of elimination. Might even be a phone hardware issue that reduces its compatibility with certain Qi charges; a statement which Apple doesn’t make on their product specs.

I thought of that as well. All other phones work on the wireless chargers except the 12.

We have tried 3 different wireless chargers:

  • One is from Costco UbiLabs 3-in-1 charger AWC1070AW - this is a fav because it also has 2 12w USB's on the rear
  • Belkin 3-in-1 Wireless Charger - Amazon
  • Logitech 3-in-1 wireless charger - Amazon

This issue is Apple, not the charger.

I had my iPhone 12 pro delivered 4 days ago. I have a mophie pad charger (mophie is a top shelf charging pad, not a cheaply), I place the phone on the pad, the charging lightning bolt appears on the phone for approx 5 second then stops charging. The charging pad has a flashing light when charging, the light flashes the whole time the phone is on the pad as it thinks it is charging but not.

If I remove the MagSafe clear case (purchased with the phone from apple) the phone will charge.
