is it possible to make a photo circular on my iMac using Catalina

Yes, you can copy a circular selection from a photo using the Preview.app. Then use Preview to create a new phot with a transparent background from the copied selection.
- In Preview use the command "View > Show Markup Toolbar"
- Use the elliptical selection tool.
- Use ⌘C to copy the selection.
- Go to the File menu: File > New from Clipboard
Now you will have a circular image on a transparent background. Save it as a PNG file.
