How do I delete photo backups from iCloud? Taking up too much of my 5 GB free iCloud storage.

How do I delete photo backups from iCloud? They are taking up too much of my 5 GB storage. On my iPhone SE when I turn off iCloud photos, it then says "2,491 photos will be removed from this iPhone. These photos will remain in iCloud Photos". I DON'T WANT 2491 PHOTOS REMAINING IN ICLOUD PHOTOS!. I want the freed up space on iCloud! I still have 30 GB free space on my phone and I regularly back them up to several hard drives.

It depends if you are currently using "iCloud Photos" specifically, or not.

If you are using "iCloud Photos" you need to delete the photo off your iPhone to get it to delete on iCloud -OR- turn off iCloud Photos so all your current iCloud photos move their full-sized permanent copy to your iPhone. The only limitation is that you have to have enough free physical space on your iPhone for this to work.

If you are using iCloud Photos you can use a PC or Mac going to www.icloud.com in a web browser to copy down any photos to your computer then delete them from that iCloud web page.

If you are not using "iCloud Photos" then your pictures are on your iPhone but would be part of any "iCloud backup" (nor iCloud Photos for that matter) you have on iCloud. You can delete an iCloud Backup by managing your backup storage.
