Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

I don’t know what resolved the same issue that I had with my iPhone 12.

  • iPhone 12 new in December 2020
  • have 2x 5Ghz wifi bands on home router
  • slow speed only on 1x 5Ghz wifi band when issue happens. No issue in 2nd 5Ghz wifi band.
  • reloading router, still the same
  • change Wi-Fi SSID name temporarily to some other name and back fixes issue temporarily for a few days before slow speed happens again
  • around end of December, went to Apple store and iPhone 12 replaced. Since then no issue
  • i have iPhone XR before and never had this slow down issue on 5 Ghz band.

Hi,

I have more or less the same problem. New iPhone 12 on iOS 14.1 (standard). It is just stuck on upload of pictures from Photos app.

Same as you; change to 2.4Ghz band, everything works fine.

This is with my internet providers build in accesspoint in the router/sentral.

Did a test with my older Airport Extreme in bridge mode. There everything works fine in both 2.4- and 5Ghz band.

Testet also on an Cisco Meraki AP at work.. also doing great there.

My best guess.. some hardware will not work properly together. This is also the first device from Apple with Wifi 6 (802.11ax)?

So my solution for now.. get new wifi hardware, use 2.4Ghz or hope there will be an fix from Apple.

we had to turn off nord vpn from Home Screen on our new iPhone 12 to fix this problem. Obviously, we won’t be able to use our iPhone on public WiFi now, unless some one (nord or apple) can fix this

That is actually not true. All apps that access data are required to use TLS (Transport Level Security:“SSL”), and as long as you only access websites that use SSL (they will have a lock next to the URL) and you have your email accounts set to use TLS (the default) then all communications between your phone and the outside world will have strong end-to-end encryption, so the fact that the network connection is not encrypted is not a risk.

VPN actually offers no benefit on an iPhone, and using it may be risky. See this commentary: Don't use VPN services. · GitHub

The original purpose of VPN, to access an internal corporate network when out of the office, is the only valid reason to use VPN.

I talked to Altibox support again yesterday. They admit the problem with the FMG, but they would not provide me with the newer VMG for free.

Apparently nothing their techs could fix so they have reported the issue to the producer (in december I think). No solution yet, and they could not give me a time estimate.

Suggest all Altibox customers report this issue to Altibox support and nag them weekly or so for a solution.
