Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

Greetings, FrostbiteXX.

Congratulations on your new iPhone 12 Pro!

It appears that you're having a problem with your iPhone 12 Pro, however. When it's connected with your home's 5GHz Wi-Fi network, applications won't download, you can't play songs in your Apple Music library, and photos won't sync either way. Good job on discovering that it works fine on the 2.4GHz network and the troubleshooting you've done as well. We're glad to help with this.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support -- If your iPhone still won’t work on your 5GHz network, the steps in this article can help. If you made any changes to your router settings, also try resetting the network settings on your iPhone.

Hello,

So I've experienced a similar issue today with my iPhone 12 Pro. I couldn't connect to my WiFi at all! I tried a hard reset on my iPhone, reset my network settings, and turned off my cellular data. Nothing was working! Very frustrating...

What I did end up doing which quickly fixed this was turning on my VPN application which immediately enabled my WiFi and then I just turned the VPN off.

WiFi still works. Hopefully this helps anyone else encountering the same problem.

EDIT: I noticed others have discovered this solution after posting this and scrolling up. Hopefully the issue will be addressed soon via and update.

If manually specifying DNS settings sped things up, that usually indicates an issue with the DNS service provided by your ISP.

This is because your ISP makes no additional revenue if their DNS servers are fast, so it's often one of the most overlooked pieces of their infrastructure.

I often tell people to try something like Google's DNS servers and see whether it makes a difference in the speed of their Internet browsing.

Both my daughter and I (both iPhone 12) have the same issue the past few days (Nighthawk AC3300 wireless router, Spectrum Fiber).

On iPhone, doing Speedtest (using App) 2.4 Ghz band works fine, 5 GHz band woefully slow.. have checked multiple sites within home, near and far, same results.

Alienware Laptop (Killer WiFi), doing Speedtest (again using Windows App) 5GHz is about three times faster than 2GHz, again at multiple locations near and far, throughout the house.

My iPadPro 12.9" 2019 shows the same results as my laptop, from multiple locations. I am using a new wireless ipad keyboard as a case.

I first suspected it might be our cases (We both have Otterbox Defender cases) but after removing the phone from the case and doing a test, no joy... still significantly slow (talking at least 10 times slower) so it appears to be a hardware issue with the new WiFi AX (Wifi 6) hardware in the new phones.

Will next try another wireless router to see if that helps.
