Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

My 12 Pro Max was having issues with a satellite router for my mesh network. It wasn’t able to properly bounce between that satellite and the main router depending upon my location in the house. My wife’s iPhone Xr was fine, same for my 16” MacBook Pro and all other devices in my house. For the time being I unplugged the satellite and all is well. I obviously determined it isn’t an issue with my router or other Apple devices.

If that's happening, it's an issue with your router/access point, not with the phone.

Using a Private Wi-Fi Address literally just makes up a random MAC address for the phone's Wi-Fi hardware. It has zero to do with signal strength.

I have Ubiquiti Wireless Access Points which can also log the signal strength of all clients, and as I toggle my 12 Pro Max between using its own MAC ID and a Private Wi-Fi Address, only the MAC address changes; RSSI remains exactly the same as one would expect it to, whether on 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz.

Note that some newer routers route all known devices to a different antenna than "guest" devices, so if your Asus does that, that could explain what your logs show.

However, the phone definitely does not change its output power level depending upon whether the MAC address is a randomized one or not.

If changing the IP to manual and the DNS entries work for you, that information is done per wireless connection, so you can make those changes in your home and it will still get information via DHCP when connecting to other networks.

From a brief skim of various Internet groups it appears that the Eir firmware is quite a bit older than the latest official firmware from Huawei, but the effort required to upgrade it is non-trivial and I wouldn't recommend it unless I were a networking person.

I've also seen a few third party sites offer advice, but I can't say whether they would help at all in your situation.

Here is an example:

The iPhone 12 is my first iPhone ever after 10 years of Android.

i have the same issues with the wifi network being idle after waking up the iPhone for a long time (at random) on my 5 ghz wifi.

i have tried renaming the ssid then going back to the old one, disabling private address, toggling manual settings… the issue persists.

i doubt it’s a router issue because I have specifically bought 2 “ Honor Router 3” routers that are capable of Wifi 6 for the iPhone to use.

after changing the ssid I had no problems for 1 week or so then the issue occurred again today. After wake up, WiFi connected at full strength but no data is sent or received from apps and Siri when tried to activate a lamp just told me “ sorry, a problem occurred”. On the router interface the iPhone is connected but only very few kbps of data are sent. After 1 minute or 2 the problems resolves by itself.

if I activate and deactivate airplane mode sometimes the iPhone doesn’t want to connect to the 5 ghz and when manually connecting I have a msg box telling me “ Can’t connect to the wifi network”. After some time the issue seems to resolve by itself but it is nether less very frustrating to have all these random connectivity issues regarding the price of the device and the fact that I have invested on hardware to NOT have these issues.

its like after some time if no data is sent the wifi chip of the iPhone is on idle and doesn’t wake up when unlocking the iPhone for some reason. It’s weird since In terms of speed and performance of wifi once connected, I have found no issues.

im going to get in touch with apple if the issue persists and hope that a software update fixes this since I have no problem at all with my other devices.

"Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro: I just tested my 12 Pro on the 5Ghz WiFi again. Same issues. It is connecting to the network and it is online. Two Thoughts:

A. Disable Cellular, if Enabled:

Cellular always overrules Wi-Fi. If it is showing LTE - then that means Cellular data is enabled. So, even if Wi-Fi is enabled along with Cellular, then Cellular is what will always be used. It will flip to Wi-Fi if and when Cellular is lost. This is because Cellular always overrules Wi-Fi. So, disable Cellular in Settings. See if it then works.

Or...

B. Authorize this iPhone:

I. Log in to iCloud:

If items are not playing, then you need to Log In to iCloud first to authorize it. Perform this in Settings on your iPhone. You;d click on the top item.

Once Logged in...

II. Use Computer for Verification:

  1. Open: iTunes or the TV app (depending on your computer)
  2. Go to: Account menu
  3. Select: View my Account
  4. Scroll to: Downloads and Purchases
  5. Click: Manage Devices
  6. Verify: if your iPhone is authorized to play these purchases.

Frostbite,

I have the same issue with a new Iphone 12 Pro. I have a tri-band router at home that has a dedicated 2.4GHz & 5GHz network.

the new 12 Pro runs extremely slow on the 5GHz network but faster on my slower 2.4GHz network.

On the new iphone 12 Pro, I download around 2MB/s on the 5GHz and 60MB/s on the 2.4GHz

I did a same-time test with a iphone 11 Pro and get my typical 220MB/s on 5GHz and same 60MB/s on the 2.4 GHz

The iphone 12 Pro also heats up strangely.

Hopefully someone can review this and get back to us with a fix.

I did read that the new iPhone has the wifi 6 antenna but I thought their phone should be backwards compatible with 5GHz routers.

I just received my 12 pro max and in the wifi settings I get the blue check by my Google Nest WiFi, but no wiFi icon in upper right - no WiFi throughput. Working with Verizon techs on this, but something tells me Apple will need to provide an update to address as devices decide which band they will use to connect and the user cannot force a choice/make a selection of only 1 band - provided I understand how the Google Nest WiFi works.
