Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

I'm having the same issue with my iphone 12. I don't think it's age of router as it works perfectly with the in-laws router (which is a lot older than ours). I will need to check my router when I'm home to see what type it is but is there a fix people have found for router settings which rectifies it?

For me, it's almost like I have to wake up the wifi connection by toggling it on and off. It then kicks it back in. Annoying as there's no clear indication the connection has 'paused' until I try to use it. I should add that I didn't have any of these issues with my iPhone 8 and my wife's new iPhone 11 also doesn't have the issue so it must be an iPhone 12 problem.

Hey guys I'm having similar problems with an iPhone 12 Pro - dual band modem - my 5g connection repeatedly just stops working for many of my apps - when I turn off WiFi and turn it back on and re-connect that seems to solve the problem - but I have to do that so frequently it's just easier to keep it on the 2.4g connection. Also running iOS 14.2.1 and also having all other devices work just fine on the 5g - all Apple and non-Apple devices work fine except the new iPhone 12 Pro.

To the apple support people - it's not the modem, it's not the router, it's not the ISP, it's the iPhone 12 - please take this seriously and attempt to resolve the problem rather than spitting out unhelpful answers from your checklist of typical "solutions for dummies" ;)

Hi, ı am from İstanbul. I had this 12 peo on 7th of dec. Until this time also ı have the same problem. The phone is not able to connect the 5gHz. Also 2.4 gHz is so slow, even the instagram stories are not uploaded ı have to refresh page or app everytime. I called helpdesk but they cant fix the problem. They are saying the modem is the problem. Before this phone, ı used and still using to connect the wifi via 6s plus. My old phone has not this problem. The problem is 12 series. There are too many report for this issue on reddit page also. So please fix the problem. We paid more money to use new tech. But this is not. Thanks.

Update:

  • After 1 week of no issues, now both 5Ghz channels (low and high bands) getting bad performance.

Downloads of <10Mbps and uploads of up to 100Mbps...

  • 2.4Ghz still ok.
  • Tried these and still issue:-
    • Reboot iphone 12
    • Forget both 5Ghz SSID and re-join
  • Forget both 5Ghz SSIDs
  • Change 5Ghz channel SSID name (high band one) on router (Netgear) and rejoin on iphone and download ~400Mbps, upload ~460Mbps
  • Forget 5Ghz SSID on iphone
  • On Netgear router, rename 5Ghz channel (high band) to original SSID name
  • Rejoin on iphone and download ~392Mbps, upload ~518Mbps

Will monitor and use only 1 5Ghz channel on iPhone 12.

Hi William, there are no firmware updates for the router. I did check. I don't necessarily agree at this point that it's a router issue because this is a newish router that most of Ireland use (the main ISP distributes these for broadband). I found that changing the IP to manual and the DNS affected the behaviour (previously discussed) but I've reverted to default because I can't be relying on that when I change to a different location - need this sorted/solid on default. Let's ignore that angle now as we've discussed it before. If it's a router issue there must be some basis for people saying that - some specific incompatibility. I don't believe there is here and like I said it's been reset to ensure there was no gremlins in there from a long uptime. I believe there is an issue with the iphone 12 pro and from reading other threads, I would say that there is support for that thinking. But again if you have a specific (but generic for my router) idea that I can try with the router I'm happy to do so in case there is some setting that needs to be tweaked to be compatible with some driver change (for instance) in the iphone 12 pro with 14.3 Thanks Conor

Start here→If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support. Report your progress, and if that doesn’t resolve it provide as much information as possible, such as does the phone see the network, and if you choose it does it prompt for a password. And if you enter the password what is the response?

Thx for quick reply FrostbiteXX. That s actually good news. I suspect "msnorway" might be Altibox customer as well :-)

I actually thought I was on their newest router, but now I see they have a new one.

I have considered google nest or other mesh. Due to my network setup with several cabled TV boxes, and smart TV's (I still prefer cables to the TV's), its not so easy to set the Router in bridgemode. But I see that Altibox is working on a solution for TV's through Google Nest.

But the newest Zyxel router might be an easy solution.

Thx again for sharing your experience!

I noticed that after installing 14.4 on my iPhone 11 Pro, iPad and Apple TV, my 5ghz wifi is completely useless. My wife's Samsung S20 has ZERO problems with the 5ghz wifi band and is able to get 200+mbps download when doing a speed test. When I switch my iPhone to the 5ghz band, I'm getting dial-up speeds.

I've done all of the normal troubleshooting:

  • Restarted modem/router multiple times
  • Verified I have no VPN's enabled on my iPhone
  • Reset network settings on iPhone and iPad
  • Restarted iPhone, iPad and Apple TV numerous times

Again, this issue only started happening after installing 14.4. On 14.3, I had no problems with any devices using the 5ghz band.

I reported the issue to Altibox (Norway) a long time ago. They promised to give me feedback as soon as possible. But suddenly yesterday they called me. No good news I am afraid. The issue is not solved and they could not say anything anout timeframe as they would have to cooperate with apple to solve it. he was instructet by his superiors that this bug was not enough to get the newer VMG home central (I have FMG) or the Google Nest they are pushing for free or at reduced price.

So it seems that either we have to live with the problem, or we have to invest in new hardware.
