Problem with 5GHz Wifi on iPhone 12 Pro

Hey!

I just got my new iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I’ve noticed some problems with the 5GHz WiFi at home. For instance, some apps won’t download data, the Apple Music app won’t play music and the Apple Photo app won’t update/download photos over the 5GHz network. Other services work normally, I can also browse the web with Safari over the 5GHz network. Some things work, some don’t. When I switch to the 2,4GHz network, everything works as normal, no problems at all. All my other devices though, for example iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any issues whatsoever with the 5GHz network. It’s just the 12 Pro.

Tried restarting both my router and iPhone. I also deleted network settings on iPhone. It didn’t help.

Does anybody have an idea what this issue could be with the 12 Pro?

I had the same issue from purchase with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, checked IP, hub and DNS with no fix, took it back to apple and showed proof of where mine has issues connecting to the 5Ghz signal but, was working fine on 2.4Ghz unless AirPods Pro was connected and in use, then neither would work. The iPad Pro, and another iPhone XS Max were all working fine as normal.

Once I got the new iPhone everything was working fine until a backup and restore caused the issues to start again, from this I forgot the networks before backing up and restoring again, since then had been working fine,

Updated to 14.3 over the air and issues restarted, so I do have a feeling it’s software related more than hardware.

Thank you for your reply.

Can this be a faulty modem or could it be software related?

I don’t quite understand what this issue could be. It is only the new 12 Pro that has these issues. My 11 Pro, my iPad Pro, my MacBook Pro, my AppleTV...all connected to the same 5Ghz network don’t have any issues whatsoever. All mobile devices are running the same iOS 14.1

I just tested my 12 Pro on the 5Ghz WiFi again. Same issues. It is connecting to the network and it is online. But...it won’t stream music, it won’t stream tv, photos app not working, etc. Using Safari, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, etc works without any issues.

I don’t understand...

Thank you for your reply and your thoughts, but unfortunately this can’t be the problem because as soon as I switch to my 2,4Ghz WiFi “everything” works just fine. I don’t have any of the above mentioned problems with the 2,4Ghz WiFi, just the 5Ghz. But, as mentioned it is ONLY the new 12 Pro. All other devices in my house work fine with the 5Ghz WiFi.

Hey,

good to know that I am not the only one on this planet with this issue :)

Photos App doesn’t work on 5Ghz band at all. Won’t upload new photos and won’t download any.

Do you also have the same issues with the music app? On 5Ghz band I can’t play any music, can’t stream any movies from iTunes.

Does the iPad Pro from 2020 not support WiFi 6? But it’s probably not the same modem anyway. iPhone 12/Pro has a brand new modem, I think.

I hope iOS 14.2 will provide a fix for this issue. If not, I might have to consider a new WiFi router. Using the 2.4Ghz band is a fix for now, yes, but it’s not a great solution because it’s much slower and not as stable as my 5Ghz band.

Hi, I’m from UK (*12Pro). Done setup yesterday and going over my apps. Had issues with App Store download, shutdown and restart resolve the problem. But now having problems with other apps again. Tried Speedtest, its not working and load Safari but no issues, can load-up websites. Tried again to login my KLM app, but it won’t even load the login page. I’m not too sure if my problem has to do with WIFI, when I use another phone line’s data I encounter the same problem too.

That’s great news. Glad yours is now working. I’m using XFINITY, so it’s their router (and it says it’s the latest version). My daughter’s iPhone 11 is having no issues with it. I had both our 5 and 2.4 using the same name. I separated them in order for our 12s to be able to use the 2.4 signal. They work great that way. When I try to connect to the 5, they no longer connect at all. Just tells me they can’t connect. Even forgot the network to try a fresh connection with no luck. Need to find a 5 signal somewhere else to test to see if it’s the phones or the router.

Frustrating that I’m not the only one. Literally apple products are the only thing I don’t read reviews on. They’re usually not this bad.

I myself have the same if not worse problem. I upgraded from a 6s to a 12pro. Restored from the cloud. Literally took 3 days. I blamed the slowness on that. Nope 4 days later phone is moving like a snail. I did update to iOS 14.2 and that fixed my pictures music and texting but internet is horrible still. This goes for apps as well. Anything that needs to slightly download something is basically not working. It took my phone 3 tried and probably 10 min just to be able to respond to this thread.

I like most on here have ordered the stuff to upgrade my home wifi. That will arrive today. But it doesn’t explain why nothing works off wifi as well. My wife is over here watching tictok like it’s going out of style. No issues. She works from home on her office computer 5 days a week slow but no issues.

I don’t know how to turn off 5G. I’m with Verizon and it says 5G here and there. Makes no difference in performance.

im just speechless that my new $1500 phone is running worse than a phone that was over 6 years old. Almost completely maxed out on internal memory, battery lasted about 2 hrs on a full charge, completely original never repaired by Apple.

lastly I use this for my business and it’s making my job and my work performance horrible.

im hoping something gets figured out soon. I’m extremely dissatisfied at this point.

I'm having a similar issue.

Received my new iPhone 12 mini today and as soon as I connect it to my 5ghz wireless the network speed drops to about 0.5mbps for all devices on the network and cuts out sporadically.

Turn the wireless off on the new iPhone and everything goes back to normal for the other devices.

My iPhone 6s and iPad Pro and our old iPad air and my partners iPhone SE get the full 300 and something my wireless can provide on 5ghz. (gigabit fiber connection)

You misunderstand:

The fact that all the routers are for the same ISP means that it's almost certainly the ISP's DNS server that is slow.

By setting your device to use Google's DNS you are bypassing the ISP's DNS server and aren't subject to their slowdowns in DNS lookups.

There is nothing for Apple to do here; the fault is with your ISP's DNS server which, as I mentioned above, is something ISPs have no real incentive to upgrade to a system that performs better.

Hello,

I just bought an iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and I'm also having WIFI issues. My router is in my living room, when I'm in any other room WIFI is terrible. I compared with my iPhone 6s and it works fine, full network speed in any room, the iPhone 12 Pro can be 4 to 5 times slower to no connection at all. Both using 5GHz, as I can monitor it on my router. The router is also WIFI 6 enabled. Is this a software or hardware issue with the iPhone 12 Pro? I thought it was meant to have better coverage not worse then the iPhone 6s (which is a beast!)
