iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

So I recently upgraded from the iPhone 11 to the 12 pro max and ever since I got it I’ve been having the same issues. Starting with the fact that the first time the device turned on, it took over an hour for it to connect to the cellular service. I have updated to IOS 14.2.1, spoke with Apple support and followed all of their troubleshooting steps and I Even changed my SIM card but the issue is still there. I work in the wireless Industry and this seems to be an ongoing issue across all the iPhone 12s in general.

I’m writing this hoping apple will notice and correct it within the next software update because this is extremely frustrating both as a user and a seller of these devices.

As far as I am aware there is nothing we can do to solve this issue.

I can tell you from my own personal experience as I’ve been dealing with this first hand. Again, I work in wireless and I have a lot of customers who come back with the same issue. Even when I am setting up the devices for my customers it takes much longer for the iPhone 12s to pick up service than it would for any other iPhone or any other device in general.

It is not.

Though there are those with issues, literally millions are using theirs with no issues whatsoever.

I have a 12 Pro Max with AT&T and have never had any cell reception issues whatsoever.

Furthermore, I have several friends who also have a 12 Pro Max and have zero issues.

I suspect it is a carrier issue, but whatever the problem is, it's not universal to all iPhone 12 models.

What you describe sounds a lot like an issue with the way your local cell towers are configured as picking up service is instantaneous for me, no different than any other recent iPhone has been.

This was posted by Forbes on the 1st of December 2020. I get your point and completely respect it. Again, I mentioned the issue on an Apple forum because I am aware Apple Pay’s attention to these and perhaps they’re unaware of the issue and can fix it in a coming update.

The more you research this issue, you will find many more articles, forums, etc. Where many many people are sharing having the same issue. Again, in my experience, every single iPhone 12 I have handled has given me this issue, some more severe than others and I will stand by this claim.

I’m not here to argue with anyone but instead to address an issue that I along with many others are also having.

Yes, there are a lot of 12 phones with the same issue. My problem with weak signal and signal dropping completely (no bars) was solved when Apple contacted Verizon and they reconfigured local towers to connect on the right signal bands. Before the config change, the phones were connecting on weak-signal bands. Others have posted more detail about this, but I believe that until the cell carriers change the way they're connecting to these new phones, we'll continue to have these issues.

I don’t think that person was saying every iPhone 12 made was affected but that the problem isn’t limited to the type of 12 series. For example 12, 12 mini, 12 pro, 12 pro max. Also there’s no need for your sarcasm “if you worked for press you would be sued.” Well that person doesn’t work for the press so your comment is irrelevant grammar cop.

I’ll tell you right now my issues are genuine. I would agree that it is probably not effecting all users. However that doesn’t negate the fact that quite a number of us are experiencing major difficulties. I’m being affected directly from my house and almost every call I make is dropped or the person on the line cannot hear me. I have Verizon. Reading many of the individuals that have had issues it seems to be in areas where you’re either switching between towers or there is not an a strong signal. I live in the Las Vegas area where I can literally see the strip from my house. I’ve never had an extremely strong signal but my iPhone 6s Plus could always make phone calls from my house with basically no issues. Accessing data from my house was not as strong.

I have spent hours upon hours trying to remedy the situation and it’s been extremely frustrating.

To JT7577: Yes, the issues are genuine for the many (thousands?, tens of thousands?) iPhone owners who can't connect at all or are having weak signal problems including dropped calls. I've had the same problem with six new iPhone 12 phones, and they were replicated by the Apple field engineer who came to my house to troubleshoot the problem. We've all spent countless hours talking with Apple and our carriers (in my case Verizon) trying to make our phones work properly. It has been extremely frustrating!

‘...Yes, the issues are genuine for the many (thousands?, tens of thousands?)...”

Evidence?

I accept most of the people who come here to describe their connection issues are genuine.

The “me-too’s” are more difficult to police.

To jt7577 This is not grammar policing it is truth and evidence policing.

Describe your problem, but don’t make up the statistics without a link. Forbes don’t count as evidence because they just cite this thread’s me-too count. plus Reddit threads that I cannot find. Most of those (iphone 12 megathread for example) were praising the phones.

Got the Verizon iPhone 12 mini delivered on launch day and have been plagued with this problem. It’s so frustrating. It seems like it can’t switch from tower to tower? More frequently happens when driving. Tried turning off 5g went to LTE only (no luck). Seems like the 5g signal is constantly weak.

confirming what others say - the only way to fix the phone is to go to airplane mode for a few seconds then back on

i do have the silicone MagSafe case and magnet wallet. With or without the wallet no change. But haven’t tried using the phone without the case. It does seem to have slightly better signal with the case off though
