iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

That’s what I have been saying. Now if you check your PRL number it want be a (1). It will have a series of numbers. Most likely 5 digits. Verizon told me and Apple said the PRL is not supposed to be a 1. 1 is the same number you get if you take the SIM card out. 1 is a disconnect number. PRL ( preferred roaming list) is how the phone connects to your carrier. If you don’t have the correct number it ain’t gonna connect. You can force it by toggling the airplane mode switch but when it loses signal it don’t know how to reconnect with out the correct number (PRL). Good luck, happy new year. Also Apple told me to return both of my phones because of this issue. So I did and got 2 Xr’s. Problem solved.

This is happening to me when at home and connected to wifi. If I'm on wifi it just drops the cell connection and if someone calls me it will ring on my watch and not my cell phone. I look at my phone and wifi is on and wifi calling is on but calls don't come in and if I try to call out it fails as well. I turn off wifi and after a few seconds cell service will reconnect and calls with come in and I can call out.

I returned my iPhone 12 Pro and got another one , besides loosing signal and dropping calls it was loosing internet connection, so they gave me another phone . So it took care of the internet problem but I was still dropping calls so I called Tech support again and he said to restore the phone to factory settings again so I did and never had a problem dropping calls again it works perfectly.

I do see my cellular signal fluctuating quite a bit even just sitting at home. Apple - please fix this...

The cellular signal is controlled by your network (and the environment in which you happen to be at the time). The network has sole responsibility for signal quality. Apple simply makes the hardware which uses whatever signal it can catch, and has no responsibility, liability, or ability to fix poor signal strength (unless or until they buy up one of the cellular networks).

@Branta UK-so what you are claiming is that whatever cell carrier each of us has they are 100% to blame for these issues? I like the sound of that. My carrier refuses to accept responsibility and the "expert" I'm speaking with at Apple also refuses to share. they were supposed to call me today and never called. never even emailed me to say they were running late or they had to postpone. which is the 2nd time this week that has happened.

see what I mean? the lack of customer service from Apple in this case is worse than poor. there is no grade poor enough that justifies.

very, very frustrating for customers like us who pay our hard earned money and are constantly chasing the problem.

I guess you weren’t around when Apple gave free cases to IPhone 4 users, because a manufacturing defect caused the phone to lose signal when held a certain way.

When a user upgrades to a new phone and starts experiencing signal issues that they didn’t experience with their previous phone, then the new phone is a possible culprit.

Regardless of who is to blame, Apple and the carriers are all going to have to work together to find the cause. Passing the buck doesn’t solve anything.

It was never a manufacturing defect.

People tended to hold their phones where the antenna was, and that would reduce signal.

Tests showed the exact same thing happened with other cell phones from other manufacturers.

The problem here is that at least in the US, almost everyone with an issue has Verizon. There have been a few reports on AT&T, but they are far fewer in number.

That seems to implicate Verizon.

People in other countries have also seen their issues go completely away after switching carriers.

Thats why this still seems like a carrier issue, or a bug in one particular vendor’s cellular base station equipment.

Ive been having the same issue, even had the phone completely replaced (when i told verizon the first time about it they tried to send me a used iphone 12 when it was brand new so obviously not the first time they've had the issue) But i thought it was a hardware issue but even replacing the phone it started doing the same thing. Its been months still having this issue on the daily, Hopefully a fix comes soon...

Note that at least for the US, the Apple warranty terms state:

If during the Warranty Period you submit a claim to Apple or an AASP in accordance with this warranty, Apple will, at its option:

(i) repair the Apple Product using new or previously used parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability,

(ii) replace the Apple Product with the same model (or with your consent a product that has similar functionality) formed from new and/or previously used parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability, or

(iii) exchange the Apple Product for a refund of your purchase price.

Hi same situation here in France.

among the 4 main carriers people who gets the signal issues seem to be with only one of them. (It’s quite marginal with the others).

It started to happen when the 5G was activated (like 3 weeks ago) in France. Before that nobody reported any issues.

This carrier seems to use the DSS technology. : mostly using the 700Mhz band who were formerly implemented for 4G.

Is this a common point with Verizon in the US ?

I just travel to Central American, and my iPhone 12 pro did not connect to any network but my mother iPhone X , and my sons iPhone SE was able to connect to the 3g networks, I got it say, it is a software problem on the 12.

We all t-mobile customers.

The only reason we have T-Mobile is because they give you free 3g access and texting, international. 3g It works fine with FaceTime audio calls.

Jan 1, 2021 5:33 PM in response to DrStrange444

Sadly I've switch to T-Mobile before and in my area their coverege is just bad. AT&T is the best coverage but slow and Verizon is good as well but way faster than AT&T. It's only and iPhone 12 issue for me. My wife has an 11 Pro Max and doesn't have this issue. I'm using TiggerFlute777's idea of 4G only and so far it's worked for the last 24 hours.
