iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

Well I guess you must have a really lucky phone as most of us are experiencing issues. Verizon is aware of this and even offered to send me a signal booster for my home free of charge. I have not received it yet so we shall see. They are dancing around the idea that I need a 5G SIM card and also pay for the 5G service plan in order for the phone to work as advertised. It seems to me like a bait and switch. Nothing said I needed to upgrade phone service for the iPhone 12 Pro Max to work as good as the older phones. Between the blame game between Apple and carriers we as customers are just left hanging. I’m very unhappy about the situation. Hopefully, either Verizon or Apple will resolve this issue. I don’t understand out of all the posts on here you randomly posted that you have no issues. What’s different about your phone, your plan, or your incentive to post a positive comment?

It's fine outside of my rural home area though like in the local busy city, stores including VZW's, etc. VZW store's helpful people found no issues over there even after removing and inserting SIM cards in both my old 6 + and new one.

Again, because it's not the SIM cards, it's their network, specifically the cell towers serving that area.

Same issue here we have 3 iPhone 12 Pro Max phones. Same issue. Verizon LTE drops to Extended Network lte even in area with full lte coverage. Lot of times it will not switch back to Verizon LTE unless you toggle airplane mode. But lot of times it will not. When on ext lte internet will not work.

verizon ran test said no issues. And did say there was a flash reported to them from Apple but didn’t say what. So Apple ran test and said it was a Verizon issue. Have a iPhone 11 and no issues side by side with 12s.

Hello:) I hear what you are saying and believe me when I say I am sorry you are having this problem and there is a problem for sure. Do read the post link that Dogcow-Moof posted to you. It may explain some of the things going on and I find it an extremely interesting piece of information. As I have stated before I so hope this issue does get resolved for you as I can see it is very frustrating.

I am with Verizon- I just traded my XR max for a new Iphone 12 Pro Max- NEVER had an issue anywhere with a signal- We just went to Georgia to see the grandkids-- and lost signal/coverage multiple times. We even lost a signal around major cities-

So I read it was an apple issue from comments in 2020-- Any updates now in August of 2021-- Verizon has sent new SIMS cards that will arrive today-- Unfortunately, I am in this with my phone and my wifes..... When mama is not happy.... No one can be happy-- I need my coverage back! I am just beyond asking Verizon for my former LTE phones back. HELP!

I've read all these myriad comments and replies, tried all the quick fixes to no avail, and I have concluded that the problem is specifically with the IPhone 12 hardware/software interaction. The reason is that neither my wife or I have this issue with our iPhone 11 Pro Max which both have the same software updates as the iPhone 12. We rely on VOIP at home because cellular reception is poor in our immediate area. The crux of the issue involves what may be happening when the iPhone 12 is put to sleep, then wakes up. After the wakeup, if the sleep has been more than a few minutes or so, VOIP connectivity is lost, even though the network and internet connection is ok. So, my thinking at present is that there is a hardware/software glitch that is peculiar to the iPhone 12 that has yet to be addressed. Something is simply not waking up and connecting properly after going to or being put to sleep.

VOIP is a completely different issue, and relies upon whatever application is being used to provide you with VOIP service; the iPhone does not have VOIP baked into iOS.

If you are referring to "Wi-Fi Calling," that is a cellular provider issue as they handle the interface between the Internet and their phone network.

If you mean Skype or similar, it would be that provider's app and you should contact them.

This isn't am iPhone hardware/firmware issue, it's a third party software or cellular provider issue, but I'd be happy to help you diagnose it further.

I won't quibble with you over the differences between calling over wi-fi and VOIP. I will stand by my statement that something is simply not waking up and connecting properly after my iPhone 12 Pro Max going to sleep or being put to sleep. We can call it a connectivity or re-connectivity issue if you wish. That this issue appears to be most prevalent with the iPhone 12, and it is not a problem with other iPhone models that I am aware of. No workable solution has been found for this issue. This problem has been diagnosed ad infinitum by many armchair geeks, so I don't need any additional diagnostics from you. A solution, however, would be much appreciated.

Aug 19, 2021 5:26 PM in response to Ca5tleguy

For being prevalent, there have been few to no reports of it here, but I won't argue that.

The bottom line is whether Wi-Fi calling or VOIP, it's reliant upon third party software Apple has no control over.

Every iPhone 12 (not Pro, not Pro Max) I've ever played with reconnects to Wi-Fi immediately upon waking up, just as you would think it would. I even stopped in an Apple Store just to try this out earlier today and every demo 12 they had came up on Wi-Fi as soon as it was awakened.

Aug 20, 2021 12:52 PM in response to Dogcow-Moof

Do you work for Apple? I think so. All you have to do is do a search for "iPhone 12 connectivity issues", and you will see reams of links to unresolved wi-fi connection issues an the iPhone 12. Yes, you can disconnect, then reconnect Wi-Fi on the iPhone 12 if the turnaround time is short, but if it is more than a few minutes, the reconnection to Wi-Fi is lost. As I stated, my wife has an iPhone 11 Pro Max and has no problem reconnecting to Wi-Fi calling and messaging after being asleep for hours. My iPhone 12 Pro Max will not do the same.

Aug 20, 2021 3:16 PM in response to Ca5tleguy

I (and many I personally work with) have 12 Pro Maxs and have never seen this issue in any form.

No, I don't work for Apple - no one here not specifically denoted as an Apple employee does.

However I have been working with Wi-Fi and wireless technologies since before the first AirPort routers were introduced.

My 12 Pro Max and every iPhone 12 of every flavor I've ever seen in any Apple Store, not to mention all those used by all my coworkers and others I've talked to instantly reconnects when awakened.

That seems to indicate it may, again, be an issue with your Wi-Fi access point or interference from other radio signals or other nearby Wi-Fi networks.
