iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max on Verizon (Orlando, Florida) had connectivity issues, dropped and failed calls. Spoke with Verizon support earlier today and they were able to help me resolve the issue:

  • Settings
  • Cellular
  • Cellular data options
  • Voice & Data - select > LTE

5G is very weak in Orlando and my iPhone used to disconnect because it was on > 5G AUTO (it was trying to connect to 5G network which was almost absent and then trying to switch back to LTE). If 5G is bad in your area, there is no point to try connecting to it. Just use LTE network only and you should have no issues with dropped calls (I hope it helps).

Why somebody continues saying it is not an Apple problem? I live in Italy. For sure I have different carriers from US (iliad). I have had an iPhone 8 working very well with my carrier for years, same SIM. I tried buying two different iPhones 12 mini and both had the problem. First time I asked for a replacement. Second time I asked for my money back and I’ll stay with my old iPhone 8 until Apple solves the problem. Hope soon. I suggest everybody does the same. Apple will have serious image consequences if it doesn’t start to acknowledge that iphone 12 series has a problem.

The last tech I communicated with suggested it was a carrier issue. I told him my family has one member with an iPhone 8 and two members with Samsung phones on the same carrier network and no one else was experiencing data dropouts. I also pointed him to this thread. His final advice was to take the iPhone back to the carrier I purchased it from.

I've posted several times how it could be a carrier issue yet the iPhone 8 could work properly.

If the phone isn't working for you, the best advice is to return it as you won't be happy having these issues until Apple, your carrier or both get them worked out.

I’ve also seen the issue switching between 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. In my case I had no connection but had full wifi signal. I switch to my 2.4GHz network and was fine. Switch back to 5GHz again and the issues was there once more. It’s very odd like there is a bug with the radios swapping or something. Makes me think this is the same for 5G to LTE switching.

Thanks for the suggestion to contact my wireless carrier. I did that back in Nov '20, Dec '20 and Jan '21. The results were they sent me a second iPhone 12 mini and the same problem continued. Exact same issues. Eventually a case was opened, a case was opened with Apple as well, diagnostics were sent to Apple and both blamed the other for the trouble=customer was left to suffer with an inferior phone. PATHETIC!

Same issue here we have 3 iPhone 12 Pro Max phones. Same issue. Verizon LTE drops to Extended Network lte even in area with full lte coverage. Lot of times it will not switch back to Verizon LTE unless you toggle airplane mode. But lot of times it will not. When on ext lte internet will not work.

verizon ran test said no issues. And did say there was a flash reported to them from Apple but didn’t say what. So Apple ran test and said it was a Verizon issue. Have a iPhone 11 and no issues side by side with 12s.

I am with Verizon- I just traded my XR max for a new Iphone 12 Pro Max- NEVER had an issue anywhere with a signal- We just went to Georgia to see the grandkids-- and lost signal/coverage multiple times. We even lost a signal around major cities-

So I read it was an apple issue from comments in 2020-- Any updates now in August of 2021-- Verizon has sent new SIMS cards that will arrive today-- Unfortunately, I am in this with my phone and my wifes..... When mama is not happy.... No one can be happy-- I need my coverage back! I am just beyond asking Verizon for my former LTE phones back. HELP!

I've read all these myriad comments and replies, tried all the quick fixes to no avail, and I have concluded that the problem is specifically with the IPhone 12 hardware/software interaction. The reason is that neither my wife or I have this issue with our iPhone 11 Pro Max which both have the same software updates as the iPhone 12. We rely on VOIP at home because cellular reception is poor in our immediate area. The crux of the issue involves what may be happening when the iPhone 12 is put to sleep, then wakes up. After the wakeup, if the sleep has been more than a few minutes or so, VOIP connectivity is lost, even though the network and internet connection is ok. So, my thinking at present is that there is a hardware/software glitch that is peculiar to the iPhone 12 that has yet to be addressed. Something is simply not waking up and connecting properly after going to or being put to sleep.

Do you work for Apple? I think so. All you have to do is do a search for "iPhone 12 connectivity issues", and you will see reams of links to unresolved wi-fi connection issues an the iPhone 12. Yes, you can disconnect, then reconnect Wi-Fi on the iPhone 12 if the turnaround time is short, but if it is more than a few minutes, the reconnection to Wi-Fi is lost. As I stated, my wife has an iPhone 11 Pro Max and has no problem reconnecting to Wi-Fi calling and messaging after being asleep for hours. My iPhone 12 Pro Max will not do the same.
