Mac mini will not connect to local devices (printer, Airport Express)

My 2018 Mac mini running macOS 10.15.7 recently stopped being able to connect to Airport Express stereo system (yes, ancient device but 2018 MacBook Pro running Catalina has no problem using it) and no longer will print from a wireless Brother printer (again, all other devices in the house, iOS as well as macOS, can use it no problem). The mini is connected to the same wifi network, no internet issues, no issue accessing network drives connected to the wireless base station.

Multiple restarts, changing my location in the Network preferences, and NVRAM reset all failed to help. Any suggestions? It's clearly just a problem with local networked devices.

Thank you!

Prem

Thanks again for taking so much time to respond and in such great detail. It turns out the problem was much simpler than all of this. I had forgotten that the new Mac mini is very sensitive to having other devices or equipment near it with respect to wireless and Bluetooth connections. I had repositioned some hard drives and their power supplies, and they were interfering with local signals. Once I moved them, all was back to normal. So thank you again and sorry to waste your time!

Using your Macbook get the IP address of the Express.

My example is a different airport but they are all going to be same.

Thusly. In airport utility click on the icon of the Express.. The summary page will give you its IP address.

As you can see below.. next to IP address. which should be same as LAN address.

I would also suggest you actually edit it from your Macbook.. so click on edit.

Go to the network tab and then network options. Change the current setting Connect Using which will be DHCP to Static. All the current values will stay except DNS. And it will need a DNS.. use 8.8.8.8 Type into the box yourself.

Your values will be different.. it does not matter.. just record what the IP is you are using..

Click Internet Options near the bottom.

Set IPv6 to link local only.

Save and then update on main screen.

Reboot the network. start up in correct order.. modem, main router.. then express then mini. 2min between each.

If the Express still won't show up..

In Airport Utility go to the top menu configure other.

Type in the static address of the Express you saved from the MacBook. And the password and press ok.

If it fails I need to ask a heap of questions but some screenshots of your setup from Macbook Pro will help.

I am hoping that will fix it.

Does the Mini use ethernet not wireless??

Thanks for taking the time to detail all of this. I didn't articulate the problem properly. The mini (on wireless) sees the Airport Express/AirPlay from both the Sound preferences and Apple Music app. However, when that choice is selected for sound/music output in Music, this error message eventually appears:

Similarly, in Printer setup in Settings, the printer is seen, but when a connection is attempted, this error comes up:

Does that help?

Thank you!

Yes.. at least in part.

But as requested i really need to know the whole network layout.

Please post some screenshots from the airport utility showing me the IP setup.

That will help me directly to find most of these that I need.

Who is your ISP?

What model modem or modem/router? If you are not sure please look on the base and give me the model number.. not serial.. that is useless.

How is the airport Express configured? Is it main router or bridged??

Is the mini connecting directly to the Express by wireless? If not explain precisely how and what it is connecting.

Would it be possible to connect to the Express directly by ethernet or wireless?

Look carefully at the printer name.. that your computer cannot find.. L2390DW_ipp_tcp.local

Is the printer plugged into ethernet or using wireless or even USB??

Now go to your computer.. open your network preferences on the mini and go to the DNS Domain under advanced.

Give me a screenshot.. none of this is going to compromise you in any way.. which is why I am giving you mine..

Does the DNS include local IP of the router?

Does domain have blank or local.. if not remove all items in domain so it is blank.

You can test this by using ping in a terminal but that might be getting too complicated. Only if you feel up to it.

Open a terminal and ping the printer by name and by IP address.

So ping L2390DW_ipp_tcp.local

Make sure you copy the name exactly not just copy as I have.. case can be important.

My thinking is your mini is on the wrong domain.. and therefore not searching correctly.

I am also expecting you have a main router from your ISP and it does not handle Bonjour properly.
