iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

My daughter has had her phone for about a week, put it in a case immediately and hasn’t dropped, etc. yesterday we took the case off to put a screen protector on and the entire perimeter of the screen is scratched up. Seems like the case caused it but how is that possible? I’m extremely upset considering how expensive it is. We’ve never experienced this with any other iPhones.

If you want to take the time to read through this thread, it's actually been explained many times why. Since you didn't, I'll give you a short answer.

Apple and the other manufacturers partnered with Corning to create glass which is much less likely to shatter in a fall. But to make glass less likely to shatter means the glass is easier to scratch than phones of a few years ago. You can't have it both ways.

People were constantly coming here and complaining of the high cost of replacing the shattered screen to the tune of $hundreds of dollars. A simple and inexpensive screen protector, something which Apple has sold and installs in their stores for many generations of iPhone is a great way to avoid having scratches.

The Verge

Why is my iPhone 11 getting scratches?

Above are two links you can read. Both are applicable and of note is the Verge article is from 2018, so screen scratches are by no means new in any way.

So why do Apple boast of the new duel ion-exchange process used on the front glass like they do on the back to make the 12 scratch resistant? This apparently protects against scratches, nicks and wear and tear. I posted a photo of that statement on this thread but it was removed!

Why do you and William continue to try and argue with people. The question is at the top of the thread. People are just answering that question. What do we have to do wear white gloves and remove all jewellery before use.

Apple should provide a warning that an screen protector must be purchased if you want your screen scratch free.

The screen is soft!!

The screen protector, which I bought fist time in my life, change the user experience with the iPhone. I would rather have my old iPhone 6s which have no scratches in 4 years then iPhone 12 pro with screen protector. Try the difference of look and fill when operating with your phone.

Your logic falls in my logic. I think it's better to have a phone that has a good screen that protects scratches and doesn't necessary need another screen protector (some users, of course, would buy screen protector because they are more student with the use of the phone) than having manufactured phone that has bad screen protection from scratches but good for falling, and you must have another screen protection.

It's stupid and no logical.

Apple should consider doing something for their customers!

The new glass improves scratch resistance… compared to the iPhone 11.

Because people keep stating that there is a defect here… but there is not.

No, it all depends upon how you use your phone.

Unlike Samsung, who apply a protector at the factory, Apple would prefer to keep the cost down and allows you to purchase and apply one if you feel it important.

Or would you prefer they raise the price $50 and apply a protector at the factory?

The gentlemen arguing that we are all just idiots who should’ve immediately applied a screen protector are missing the point. CLEARLY there is a difference in the glass susceptibility of the 12 compared to earlier versions. I never used a screen protector, and have done far worse to my phone screen and never a scratch. There’s a stark contrast between the 12 and the earlier versions, and that is at minimum a disappointment - at most a sneaky rip off on Apple’s part.

No one has called you or anyone else an idiot. I'm not sure where you've been or which iPhones you've owned, but EVERY iPhone ever made or sold has had screens which could scratch. These forums have been witness to loads of threads from people just like you and others here complaining their new phone scratched for just about every model phone ever sold. The easiness with which they can scratch has definitely changed over the last couple models for sure. I'm not going to post the links for you to read as you can take your own time to read through this thread where many links have been posted explaining the new generation glass, how it is 4 times less likely to shatter in a fall and that means it is more easily scratched. You see, there is no company who has been able to create a glass formula which is harder to break AND harder to scratch. If someone could create that, they'd become richer beyond their dreams. What is most different however, is how few people now complain their phone shattered and they will now have to pay $hundreds of dollars replacing it. Those threads have virtually gone away as the glass on iPhone and most other major manufacturers phones have become harder to shatter, while still being able to be scratched.

If you've somehow managed to never scratch a naked iPhone screen, you are most unique. This is one reason Apple has sold and installed screen protectors in their stores for every model iPhone ever sold. This is why screen protectors are a $Multi-Billion sales item from more sellers than I could possibly count. Just to go to Amazon and search for screen protectors for any modern iPhone and literally hundreds if not thousands of options can be bought.

I'm sorry your phone is scratched, but anyone who doesn't put an inexpensive screen protector on a phone costing now $1,000 OR more because their phone didn't scratch in the past is akin to buying a luxury car and not buying insurance for it because you never had an accident.

I've also had my iPhone 12 pro for only a few days. Last night I noticed a scratch at the top and have no idea how it could have gotten there, I have been extremely careful with it. The scratch is deep enough to feel with a fingernail. My previous phone was an iPhone 8, never had a screen protector, never... only an Otterbox case. The iPhone 8 was used for over 2 years, it has not one single scratch on the face, not even a scuff. This is very disappointing that this new iPhone is so easy to scratch. Based on my previous experience, I didn't think I was going to need a screen protector.
