iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

I’m actually surprised my screen protector gets little or no scratches or grooves and is harder than the actual display. I’ve had screen protectors shatter (protecting display wonderfully) but never scratch.

This is the entire point of a screen protector. They are specifically engineered to be harder to scratch, while shattering upon impact to absorb the impact to protect the screen from shattering.

OK. Good for you. But what statement are you specifically disagreeing with?

That I own iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max?

That I put screen protectors on them before I even turned them on?

That my iPhone 6 was the only phone which I didn't put a protector on?

That I didn't blame Apple, instead it was all on me for not spending a few dollars on a protector?

What statement exactly do you disagree with?

Are you for real!

Whats the likelihood of a sand grain being in a pocket. My phone only went into my soft coat pocket with nothing else.....wait a micro grain of sand could of entered my pocket on my hands....unlikely!

If they are that easily scratched Apple should warn you need a screen protector.

We are all sucked in by the promise of a tough ceramic screen that is the toughest on the market.

I had a deep groove in my screen.

If you have no reasonable explanations of these scratches why post?

The screen is soft!

Reading the responses from the people justifying this product performing this way is complete nonsense. What this man is speaking of is exactly what happened to mine. If you’re a true Apple fan and not some obsessed fan boy, you’d prefer they keep up their quality.

I had an X with no screen protector or case for 3 years. NEVER scratched the screen like this. This 12 Pro is EASILY scratched and I work in an office. Admittedly I set it down on the screen to avoid damaging the 3 raised lens in the back.

Now before you start hurling nonsense about screen protectors & cases being required, consider this. I assume these phones are to be used as they come with no protector or case if you are not in an abusive environment. Otherwise what’s the point of designing anything at all if we have to protect the **** out of it? It should be durable enough for normal use. If dropped, etc that would even be an understandable time to say, “you caused this.” Otherwise, it’s just a poor quality product.

This one is maddening because they’re marketing this screen as though it’s the toughest they’ve ever made. I based my decisions on that considering this is the 9th iPhone I’ve owned and never had any other smartphone in my life. That’s great they don’t shatter as easy, but this trade off is likely to affect a LOT of people given how easy this was to scratch in TWO WEEKS of use between home and office. We are talking noticeable scratched that would not even happen to a screen protector. I’m telling you it is SOFT.

It is.

Your complaint about the screen protector is exactly the issue; screen protectors are very hard and difficult to scratch but shatter very easily.

Those of us who have been answering user questions here for years have seen questions about replacing shattered screens go from a near daily occurrence to almost zero with the iPhone 11 and 12 families.

Frankly, I have broken one screen over the course of 9 iPhones, and it was because I ran it over with a truck, so that’s expected. I have NEVER used a screen protector, but mostly always a case until iPhone X. Which again, I had without case or protector for 3 years.

If you shatter a screen you DEFINITELY earned it in my opinion. They have never just shattered as easily as this one scratches. My point is that a shattered screen will result from a definite impact. Scratches are a far great risk to these phones everyday now. I’m sorry but this was not a good change to make. If there were 20 million shattered screens, there will be 100 million heavily scratched ones in my opinion. Being in your pocket with car keys is enough to ruin your day.

Either way, if you own a smartphone and don’t have insurance, you’re gambling with at least $1000 everyday.

Lots more $30 deductibles coming.

Having been on this forum for over a decade, until the glass formula was changed on iPhone 11, multiple people a day came on here to complain about their shattered screen from a simple call and the fact it would cost in the hundreds of dollars to replace it. Those people might disagree with your sentiment when it costs just a few dollars to put a screen protector on an iPhone to protect from scratches.

THEN INCLUDE ONE. THIS is what we are talking about. The phone should be ready to use out of the box. Why are you letting them off the hook on this? Why is it a decision between one or the other? I'm sorry, but there is no way an "easily shattered screen from a simply call" would be more than an anomaly compared to what this is doing. Why switch from the 11 Pro materials if they were working?
