iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

Correct. Never had the iPhone 11.

What I am saying is NO other iphone I’ve had before this (I’ve owned 9 and the X was the latest) had such easy scratch issues. It’s EXTREMELY easy to scratch.

The 12 Pro specifically touts and markets its screen as though its the toughest ever. Yes, they’re very specific in the fine print, but it’s clear the intention

Basic scratch resistance on a touch screen should be expected. Car keys scratching a screen or a grain of something on an office table is nonsense. It’s a major reduction in screen performance since the X. I can protect against a drop or even use a protector if I’m in harsh conditions. Scratches are a much greater threat with how soft this is and that affects everyone. If the phone requires a protective layer that should at least be noted if not provided.

Thank you for your very articulate comments. I agree completely. These phones should be strong enough to with stand every day use for the purpose of which they are intended. I have had an iPhone since 2010 and have not once dropped it and broken a screen. I have never replaced a screen. And now with very light gentle use after 3 days without a screen protector (I did order one the day I bought my phone but it took 3 days to arrive) there are significant scratches on the naked screen.

So we are choosing to reward those few people who drop their phones but now the vast majority who take care and use the phones normally will have to replace screens for scratches instead? At $429.00 a screen? After spending $1500.00 on a phone that can't be taken out of the box and used with out scratching the screen? I guess Apple will just increase their profits by becoming replacement screen sellers.

A warning would have been nice. Right on the front of the white plastic sheet that you pull off the phone "Do not remove this protective cover unless it is to apply a screen protector". My toaster comes wit a warning not to use it in the bathtub...come on Apple ...WTF?

I love bad analogies! I'm quite sure your toaster didn't have any printed warning to NOT use your toaster in the bathtub. Appliance manufacturers believe people are generally smart enough to know electricity and water are a recipe for electrocution. Just like most people who buy phones made of glass are smart enough to know if they don't want their very expensive screen to become scratched, they should protect it.

I did see a sad article last night however. Some lady was taking a bath and using her phone while it was plugged into charge. Sadly, she dropped the phone in the bath water plugged in, was electrocuted and died. Very sad. Very avoidable too.

Oh and your comment "come on Apple?" This is a user to user only forum. Apple isn't here reading any of these posts.

Few people?

Before the iPhone 11, questions about replacing a smashed screen were posted more or less daily.

I have had mine less than a week. I count about 8 scratches already. I passed down all of my previous iPhones to my kids. None have ever had a scratch. My iPhone 11 perfect. I am so disappointed. I was hoping to take my phone in the water for some pictures but now I’m not so sure. I haven’t dropped it or anything. Just been in my pocket and a pocket in the car. I would rather go back to my iPhone 11. Don’t buy a 12!!!

I bought the 12 Pro a month ago and had a screen protector installed from day 1 and a case as well, I didn't even use the phone without it. 2 weeks ago I notice a scratch on the side black bezel which is not covered by the screen protector. I have been contemplating about exchanging the phone but then I feel what would be the point, the other one would be just as vulnerable as this one. Trying to embrace it but it does make you mad when your new device gets scratched so easily!

Never tried to exchange , might try that after reading a lot about other people having the same problem, not too happy with apple anyway after finding out no ear phones no charger/plug in the box , they say they are going green and to use your old ones , what if you don't have ones that are compatible , might go Samsung next time .

I have never had a broken screen. But now I have a brand new phone with scratches on it. I would not have voted for a screen that was harder to break but easier to scratch. Apple did not advertise that trade off with the new ceramic screens. How many average users are going to discover how easily their screen scratches vs how many users drop their phones. I personally, have not dropped any of my phones once since 2010. And before you get all preachy about screen protectors...YES I KNOW...but my screen protector hadn't arrived yet and I did not think for one second that I had to leave my brand new $1500 phone in the box while I waited for the screen protector for a couple of days. There should be a warning on the white cover that is on your phone in the box - DO NOT REMOVE COVER UNLESS IT IS TO ADD A SCREEN PROTECTOR - or maybe - DO NOT USE PHONE WITHOUT A SCREEN PROTECTOR - I am not stupid, or careless, and my screen scratch in under 3 days with gentle use in the hand. Not in a pocket. Not in a purse. And not even outside. This is a design FLAW. Period. It's like having car tires that can't be used outdoors.

100% Totally agree with you...

Have an iPhone 12 Pro Max with a case since day one, screen protector and now I tooked out the case to add a camera lens protector and I found an scratch on the back glass, same spot and same scratch that has another phone on a forum that I found, there's no way that scratch happened to me, it came like that from factory, and now are they going to say that is cosmetic? hello people we are the consumers we don't owe Apple, they owe us, Apple your phone is over $1000 dollars so you should take care about your mistakes.

Dec 22, 2020 6:08 AM in response to leefromfolkestone

I have treated my iPhone 12 Pro Max like I would treat anything that is worth $1,099, including the iPhone Xs Max I traded in to get it. My Xs Max had no cosmetic problems and looked like new when I gave it back two years after got it, yet a month after having the 12 Pro Max I am sickened to see scratches all over the screen. I wish I could go back and put a screen protector on, but in hindsight I had no idea this would be an issue. I keep my right pocket exclusive to my phone and never put anything else in it, yet it looks like I put my phone through a woodchipper. Very disappointed in this ceramic shield, which might help me with a phone drop but is soft enough to be scratched way too easily.

I have also had my phone for 3 days now and when I got up this morning I noticed a deep scratch on my iPhone 12, the scratch is only 1 cm but still, its a scratch on my new phone. My other phones prior to this never got a scratch on them like this one has. I prefer the glass on the other iPhones like the iPhone 11 Pro Max. My question: is there a way to get the scratch out or do I have to now pay $29 to have the screen replaced?

Dec 27, 2020 4:52 AM in response to leefromfolkestone

I had my 12 pro max since it came out and never had a problem with it. I heard about people having keys in a pocket with their phone and it scratching so I tried so hard to not do that. Well now that it is winter, I forgot and put my keys with my phone and boom. Two tiny scratches on the screen. So much for this “super strong” and “never before” screen that scratches if you look at it wrong.
