iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

Well, after contacting both Vodafone (my upgrade provider) and Apple, the response for both was no replacement.. Apple support encouraged me to write up a proper negative feedback, which i did and neither of them offered any care advice.

After a bit of research I bought a screen protector by Mous Uk, what they call hybrid glass, and Im very happy wt it. It comes wt an applicator and instructions and I cannot notice the scratches underneath it now, also the touch response is the same as not using any protector. I just wish I knew beforehand about this screen flaw in the new models as I would have waited and installed this even before i turned on the phone for the first time. I never had that with previous models, my last Iphone XS was used wt no screen protector for two years and nothing like this happened.

Apple should definitely review and improve this glass screen, this is not good enough for a device this expensive. #unimpressed

Not sure why you suggest I buy an iPhone 12. I actually bought two of them. But I'm smart enough to realize glass is glass and glass scratches, so I had screen protectors installed before either phone was ever turned on. As I mentioned, EVERY iPhone ever made could be scratched. Not putting a screen protector on an expensive phone makes as much sense and not buying automobile insurance because you never had an accident.

If it could be done at a price acceptable to Apple without other negative consequences, Apple would do it.

Nevertheless, because it is so much harder (Mohs 9 - 10) it will shatter much easier.

Older phone glass sheets were harder, but users would have to spend $300 to replace them pretty regularly.

Most would rather not spend $300 to replace the glass but use a $30 screen protector.

Not the iPhone 4 thing again… about which Apple was 100% correct. Tests showing holding other phones in the same way caused reception issues with them as well.

This is not an Apple-specific issue, it's an industry issue.

You defend the iPhone thing again? You admit it is an issue but you try and deflect blame from Apple by stating 'it is an industry issue'. We pay a premium to use Apple products so we expect better. Apple advertised their glass as Ceramic Shield. Anyone who hears that would assume the glass will not scratch easily when placing it in your pocket, handbag, facedown on table, etc., etc., Don't patronise the people on here by stating silly examples such as; 'would you drive your new car without insurance so why use your new phone without a screen protector'. Driving a car without insurance is not the same thing, however, driving a car without a windshield protector is the same thing. Apple did not (anywhere) in their marketing material warn of such an issue or advise us that we SHOULD use protection on our new screens since they are now easier to scratch. They said Ceramic Shield, over and over again. Why do we give these people so much of our money? You complain about a genuine issue, they allow their defenders to constantly reply to your comments by making you feel as though you are at fault for using your iPhone 12 screen in the exact way it was advertised which is without a screen protector!

That quote about the nano-crystals is hardly common parlance or knowledge. When thinking of shields/hard ceramics they are more likely to think of rado watches etc.

Bottom line- I expected my iPhone 11 to be less scratchable than my iPhone 6 Plus. Especially as they didn’t brag about the glass on the 6 Plus! But they should have. I will be seeing Apple tomorrow at the Genius Bar which they set up when I called support- saying they would expect it to shatter before it ever scratched. Ha. And I’ll be sure to show them this incredibly long thread. I hope they will address this issue to my satisfaction. I’ll post back tomorrow night.

The irony is that what happened to your screen protector is exactly what happens to hard glass.

If a phone company made the glass hard enough to be impervious to most scratches, it would do precisely that - shatter and crack at the slightest provocation.

The people you at Apple you want to read your comments do not read these forums; I'm not sure why so many seem so adamant about not sending comments where they will read them and insist on posting here.

Once more, post your comments to Apple here:

If you don't want to use a screen protector, you don't have to, but odds are your screen will scratch.

If you don't wash and wax your car, the paint will fail, and guess what your auto manufacturer will do in that case - absolutely nothing.

Oh, and users here (that includes you) don't get points for "defending Apple," we get points for answering users' questions and solving their issues.

Simply posting gains us nothing.

You can do whatever you want with your phone. If you don't use a screen protector however, you cannot complain if:

  1. You phones screen becomes scratched
  2. You screen shatters in a fall

Otherwise it's entirely up to you the user. Me on the other hand find that screen protectors are a MUST HAVE for any phone I own.

Personal choice is a great thing. You choose what you want. I'll choose what I want.

But if you have a phone which is scratched (most likely why you're in this thread), I have a phone which has no scratches on its screen.

Obviously I want Apple to listen. And I gave them my opinions. They heard me.

I just don’t understand why so many on here are apologists for Apple.

fact- the screens used to be harder and more scratch resistant. Not one scratch on my 6 plus.

fact- the screens are now much less scratch resistant and Apple did not mention or warn about this.

Well. It cost Apple $259 CAD to replace my scratched screen that was in the return window free of charge due to Covid. They know they messed up. They know their glass used to be so hard that in the context of careful use and storage the dang screens would not scratch. That is the quality everyone bothering to share their disappointment here expected.

it satisfies me greatly that Apple literally just paid for their mistake. Thank you Apple.

mark my words at some point in the future they will at least offer the choice of glass that may shatter but will hardly if ever scratch once again—like it used to be.

i don’t want to use and keep changing screen protectors when the tech plainly exists to return to what I had with my iPhone 6 Plus. Some of us are careful with our phones and don’t shatter them. A scratched up iPhone or screen protector for that matter looks cheap and not up to Apple brand and tech.

Regardless of what you WANT, what you've got is a phone whose screen harder to shatter, while easier to scratch.

It's not "trolling" when you tell someone facts. You can complain here till cows fly, but it won't change the composition of the glass on your phone. Nor can anyone here on this user to user only forum do anything to change the composition of the glass.

Believe what you think you deserve or accept reality of what you've got.

Your choice.

Initially I read a news article about many people complaining of scratches on their new iPhone 12s. So I searched and found a place to vent. Regardless of whether or not Apple have seen these, it is a place for people to vent. Don’t discourage that. We’re venting to other Apple users, let it be mate. Maybe you can make a forum were you and the other Apple defenders can vent about us.?

We don’t like it how Apple sold us a snowflake screen and called it Ceramic Shield. Even more than that, we don’t like it when someone then places the blame on the buyer for not knowing they needed a screen protector when they’ve never needed one before to prevent easy scratches. There was no forewarning. That is it in a nutshell.

You’ve read it many times already. I’ve myself said it many times already. This is not a car without insurance, this is not a human in the sun, it is a phone screen that is so weak against scratches. My view is, if it NEEDED something to PREVENT damage, then it should NOT be a choice; something should have been factory applied before sold to us which would have prevent all this talk! Why didn’t Apple leave the camera lenses exposed on the iPhones, why place them behind sapphire crystals? Because they NEED to be protected to PREVENT damage. Same same.

Jan 17, 2021 1:25 PM in response to salfromparramatta

Venting isn't the purpose of this site; there are plenty of sites that are.

Apple sold you a phone with a screen containing ceramics called Ceramic Shield.

It's not "so weak" against scratches, it is more scratch-resistant than the iPhone 11 and Galaxy S20, as Corning's "Gorilla Glass" has also moved towards shatter resistance in favor of lower scratch resistance.

Perhaps Apple can make you happy and instead of allowing you to buy a $30 screen protector, they will apply one at the factory instead and raise the price of the phone by $100.

It not about the hardness, it’s about the sharpness of my nail. Are you dull?

You can easily cut steel with sand. You can cut steel with pressurized water. I have no doubt the screen is harder than my nail, but my nail was sharper. It also depends on the molecular and crystalline structure of the iPhone 12 glass, which hasn’t been disclosed. There are a lot of factors. My nail might have been in between the crystalline grains of the glass, and for sure it was sharp enough to cut it, because it did. I have no reason to lie. I even heard the screen crack as the cut happened.
