iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

You can "expect" anything you like, but the phone industry is absolutely huge and Apple is just a tiny player. Corning does work with Apple, but an advance in materials science like glass that is both harder to scratch and is more shatter-resistant would be a cash cow for Corning and they would sell it to Apple and every other phone manufacturer. (Likewise, if some other company figures it out before Corning, they can pretty much drive Corning out of the Gorilla Glass for phones marketplace.)

An even better example than auto insurance is automotive "clear bras." Most people purchasing a higher-end car wouldn't drive the it off the dealer's lot without one - but many people do. Those that do often have stone chips on the nose of the car by the time they get it home. Sure, the car company could apply one at the factory and charge you a lot for it, but most prefer to choose their own, it's up to you.

You don't have to use a screen protector, I know people that don't, but you need to use extra caution and/or a case that provides its own.

Ceramic Shield increases the strength of the glass and it actually is more scratch-resistant than the glass on the iPhone 11 family of phones was.

You can use your phone without a protector, and the ads are not lying to you - all the items you see in the ad are softer than Mohs 5.5 or so - pennies, miscellaneous items, even many car keys. Bits of granite or steel, not so much.

So you can use your phone without a screen protector, just as you never have to wear sunscreen as long as you are cognizant of how long you've spent outdoors.

Whether you need to use a screen protector (or for that matter, sunscreen) is completely dependent upon your lifestyle.

I've never used any iPhone - and that means going back to the original in 2007 - without one, as it's cheap insurance.

What you choose to do is up to you.

Would you feel better if Apple Stores acted like car dealers and tried to upsell you on a bunch of accessories before you left the store?

Exactly. Calling it "ceramic" is also misleading as many people know that ceramic watch bracelets are known to be extremely scratch-resistant. ceramic watch bracelets are comparable in hardness to tungsten carbide.

Ceramic Shield is called that because there are "ceramic nano-crystals are embedded in the glass matrix using a high-temperature crystallization manufacturing process."

It's not misleading to call something containing ceramic crystals… "ceramic."

I am stunned that you would compare using a phone without a screen protector to not using sunscreen! What's wrong with you people? Skin cancer is now comparable to a scratch on your phone?

And yes, Apple do push extras (like car companies) when you buy from them but typically they push for their own benefit, not the benefits of others (screen protector suppliers); they push Apple Care Protection Plans and they pushed it hard when I bought my two iPhone 12 Pros.

You made that assertion.

If you are only outside in sunlight for ten minutes at most every day, most doctors would say you don't need sunscreen at all.

They don't push it, they just warn what the costs will be if you don't get it.

It's still your choice.

That quote about the nano-crystals is hardly common parlance or knowledge. When thinking of shields/hard ceramics they are more likely to think of rado watches etc.

Bottom line- I expected my iPhone 11 to be less scratchable than my iPhone 6 Plus. Especially as they didn’t brag about the glass on the 6 Plus! But they should have. I will be seeing Apple tomorrow at the Genius Bar which they set up when I called support- saying they would expect it to shatter before it ever scratched. Ha. And I’ll be sure to show them this incredibly long thread. I hope they will address this issue to my satisfaction. I’ll post back tomorrow night.

Well folks. After explaining the issue, and mentioning this 31 page thread, my local Apple store *replaced* my scratched glass free of charge as it fell within the extended return period caused by lockdown/holidays and bc they can’t do return replacements due to Covid. Wow. Lucky day for me. Needless to say I will be purchasing a glass protector to protect my newly restored iceRink 11!

Thank you to the manager at Apple Fairview in Toronto for doing the honourable thing. Restored some of my faith in Apple.

YMMV

If I tell you that had your return period expired, they would have not replaced your phone. You scratched it, not them. People on here are not being negative, they are p’d off after realising how easily their screens scratched. You also realised this, which is why you went went to apple store. Lucky you. You know what bothered me and I’m guessing everyone else; we don’t even know how it scratched. No drops, no scrapes, just a surprise to suddenly notice it. Not being negative, just stating my experience.

That's why you buy a screen protector at time of purchase or even before.

With the 12 Pro Max, I had my screen protector three weeks before the actual phone arrived.

Before COVID, most people buying iPhones at Apple retail stores had screen protectors installed by Apple Store staff before leaving the premises with their new phones.

William, I had screen protector, it cracked, I mentioned this weeks ago. Apple gave me new one. That new one chipped. Still on my phone. Happy to prove it if need be. Mate, seriously, Apple’s glass scratches easily, Belkin’s screen protectors chip easily (my wife’s one also chipped). I know you’ll come back with some lame response but the reality is, people here aren’t happy. We are complaining. Busy people giving up our time to send a messages. We know Apple will read these. We also know they give blind followers who defend them brownie points (Apple points). This is the only logical reason why you constantly defend a weak product sold at premium prices. Look at the people who bought AirPod maxes and have returned them due to condensation issues; read about it in the news. I’m sure if I visited one of those complaint discussions I’ll see another defender William on there telling the user that maybe they should wear them differently or that all noise canceling headphones are affected by condensation (which isn’t true). Apple’s newer glass screens scratch easily. Some don’t want to use screen protectors. What does apple advise that person to do?? Seriously??
