iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

He doesn’t actually put any pressure on the blade in the video, he just hovers it over the edge with no pressure. My nail was sharp as ****, could easily cut my skin with it. I guarantee you if he applied some light pressure with a blade in the screen, it would cut the screen. Same way that my nail cut my screen. Maybe a freak accident or bad luck, but I 100% cut my screen with my nail.

OK......sorry, still not buying your nail cut your iPhone screen so badly you heard the screen crack. But if you believe it, I guess that's all you need to be comforted with. Your finger nail, sharp or not is simply not hard enough on the Mohs scale to cut glass.

However I still wonder WHY you even tried to scratch your iPhone screen with your fingernail? For bragging rights? For what purpose would it even be prudent to purposely attempt to inflict permanent harm to your screen?

They are abrading materials, but they are not taking into account sharpness. They are not sharpening objects when calculating moh’s value. Are you telling me that you do not know the difference between a dull knife and a sharp knife? A sharpened object can cut into harder objects with higher Mohs value.

You can without a doubt cut harder materials with softer materials. And some of that might be chance, that my nail was positioned right between a weak spot in-between the crystalline grain of the glass. I’m not saying I can do this easily. Most likely it will never happen again and most likely it was a freak accident of chance — a perfect storm, or maybe a QC issue with the glass itself. But, ultimately, I did cut my screen with my nail.

No reason to lie. Science is great, but blanket science doesn’t really apply to my situation, obviously. If everyone gave a blanket “scientific”statement even though, on rare occasions, reality gave a different result, science itself would not have progressed very far.

No, it was a accident. I had freshly clipped my nails, and was picking my phone from my pocket when I felt it start to drop, my thumb got into an awkward position, and ended up pressing my nail at about a 90 degree angle into the screen to prevent it from falling into my pocket. I should have let it go, since it was in my pocket but it was just a reflex action. I heard a crack, but thought it was something else. Turned out it was my nail cutting into the glass. I did put a lot of thumb pressure, but still...

iPhone 12 Pro Max is pretty big, and the acrylic case is much more slippery than most other cases. I only had the phone a few days at that point. The cut aligns exactly where my thumb rests naturally.

This is a false statement, just because you bold words doesn’t make them true. Mohs might be a general measure of hardness, but it doesn’t take into account all possibilities. It doesn’t include applying pressure between the crystalline grain structure of materials, does it? No, it’s just a general measurement.

The Moh’s value of the iPhone glass, depending on the grain size, grain size uniformity, and its structure, might very well be much lower in-between the crystalline grain structure. They are not testing Moh’s hardness with a microscope, pinpointing the grains, and applying pressure in that specific point. Again, Moh’s is some kind of average, general hardness measure. It doesn’t really apply to what happened in my situation.

Misiu21, I feel that you shouldn’t have to stress trying to defend yourself re lobsterghost’s posts. I feel your pain about the 11 and 12 screens. I know first hand how extremely scratch-able the screens are. .

I decided I didn’t want to stress any longer on this, and left this thread a few weeks ago.

What I came here to say you and to others who are upset by Apples flawed 11 and 12 screens is that I got my screen replaced by Apple- for free, during my return period. It cost them $269 Canadian or something like that. They saw the scratches. They understood my issue, coming from having a 6 Plus.

However, that’s not the biggest news!

The big news is that..... my replacement screen has not a single, minute scratch anywhere on it! Not a hairline. Not a tiny dent. Nothing. It will be a whole month come Monday of having this new replacement screen (repair performed Jan 8). Read into that what you will! Yes, I’m being more mindful. But I have no screen protector on it, and no case (same as my 6 Plus) and it’s kept in my Jeans front pocket. It’s still completely pristine. My feeling, my perception, and my experience lead me to imagine the replaced screen has different properties. I am truly shocked and overjoyed every time I look at it that there still isn’t one visible mark anywhere.

Cheers all. I may not return here for a few more weeks because of how stressful this thread is.

If I ever do see a mark on the screen I will return and post here.

I can already imagine how this post will be refuted just like yours, Misiu21. So I won’t be here to read any replies or stress over how to answer the negative responses for a while. I just can’t take any more stress what with Covid and family and all. I have no reason to make this up. I’m typing this on my iPhone 11 which with my replaced screen has been scratch-free now since Jan 8. Repair done at Apple Fairview mall in Toronto between 5 and 7:30 pm. If you want to see my screen and my free repair receipt I suppose I can make a YouTube video about it. But really, I shouldn’t have to. No other customer forum has this much stress on it that I’ve encountered.

Good day to you Misiu21 and to all others on this thread who are unhappy for the same reasons as the original poster.

Sunny regards,

Gary

I received a 12 Pro Max with a 3-4 mm gouge near sensors/ear speaker. I rubbed an area around it with a microfiber cloth/just damp, and I could see fine swirl marks being left in the screen if held in the sun.

That said, I actually use different types of ceramic coatings on vehicles (for protection) but also to avoid very fine scratches. It’s a very hard chemical I use for the process. So when seeing they did a ceramic screen I was pretty excited as I’m not the screen protector type, and ceramic used in my industry is hard. I assumed would be a good candidate for not having to use a screen protection film. (I Just like the Apple leather mag safe) No luck with screen protection in the past, has just not been up to my ocd ways, as even the slightest bit of dust, dirt starts getting under, I’d almost rather look at little scratches. Point being when I brought my situation to Apple and the 3rd party place purchased, Apple told me it would make less likely to shatter, but is softer to achieve that. Well in turn, it scratches easier. My place of purchase told me they have seen screens that are a month old and look a year old compared to previous phones.

The phone itself is insane! Hands down biggest upgrade to camera in few generations as a complete package ie. Camera, processor, and 5G. Aesthetically looks great, but until in a case, the stainless on outer edge is fingerprint crazy, you are kinda forced to use a case to protect protruding cameras...ok, fine.....it’s the screen scratching so easily that I have an issue with. I recommend a clean microfiber cloth you can use to wipe down before charging at nite, having cloth either very moderately damp, or using a traditional screen cleaning liquid. Been doing that to avoid dirt build up, and anything removed from the screen that could be abrasive and cause scratches in pocket, etc.
