iPhone 12 Pro - Call Failed - Verizon

I've had my new 12 Pro for 1 day and cannot make or receive calls. Receive "call failed" message. Can receive and make texts as well as email. Verizon says it is related to 5G outage but it doesn't make sense since LTE and WiFi calling don't work. Anyone having similar issues?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I wanted to update everyone who has been following these post. Verizon was nice enough to send me a new iPhone (12 Pro.)

When I got it today, all I did was activate the cell service over wifi. I did not put any apps or personal data on the phone. It came with software version 14.2.1 I did not update it to 14.3. I turned off automatic updates. Which also in on by default. I made sure Wifi calling was on. (by default its on)

I started to call. Did not drop a single call. It was happening on my older (2) 12pro's every 3 -5 min. I haven't mad 100's of calls yet. But is seems the problem is not there. So it seems to be the update process. Not the update or the Version. My old phones worked fine. My first phone came with a version less then 14.2.1. I updated it to 14.2.1 as soon as I did Wifi calling started to drop. My second came with 14.2.1 it worked fine. As soon as I updated it to 14.3 it started to drop calls.

This phone (which is my third) came with 14.2.1 so far it works fine. I will not update it to 14.3

So again, I think it is the update process that is causing Wifi calling to break. As I make more calls, I will update everyone.

possible solution: We bought an 12 Pro Max yesterday, my gf was worried about losing her pictures even though it was backed up on iCloud. She put in her old SIM card from her 8+ and couldn’t make any calls just like everyone else. I put in the correct SIM given to us by the store and it’s working perfectly now

Hopefully this helps someone else 👍

I did try and update carrier services. Did not help. Restore was the only thing that worked. Verizon even sent me a new phone which worked great until I updated to 14.3. I do not think it is the software. It is the update process. It is not a complete update when you do it over the air. More like a patch. To get the complete update you must do it via your computer. If you do it over the air you then must restore to get the total update. Can not be done over the air. Even if you erase everything.

Plug it into your computer crate a backup. Plug it in again. Just do a restore. Not a restore from back up. Let it do it’s thing. It may update to 14.3 again. When done, plunge it in again. Run a restore from back up to bring back your data. Re-enter your passwords. They were remove when you ran the first restore. Any you will be up and running and wifi calling should work.

good luck. There is something broken with the process of updating over the air.

Hi, deggie; yes, this appears to be a Verizon issue, but whether it is a network problem, a baseband firmware problem or carrier settings isn’t clear. It might even be hardware, because the cellular radio modem in the 12 is a new design that supports 5G, and isn’t like any other cellular modem in use in other iPhone models.

For users with the problem, there are a couple of things to try:

  • Make sure the phone is not in Airplane mode
  • Update your carrier settings: Go to Settings/General/About and wait for a couple of minutes; if there is an update you will be prompted to install it
  • Restore your phone using your computer; use iTunes on all Windows PCs and Macs running an OS older than Catalina; use Finder on Catalina and Big Sur (10.15 and 10.16)

The restore using a computer reinstalls and/or updates the baseband firmware; updating over the air does not.

BTW, this has been discussed in this thread, but unless you read all of it you will miss these troubleshooting steps.

Ok. So, I have gone through all the 16 pages of the discussion here. Let me just say, it more likely, is the problem with the phone. I am from India and have an unlocked iPhone 12 on Jio 4G LTE(carrier’s name). We don’t have 5G here yet. I have the exact same issue as most of other users are experiencing. Broadly:-

(a) Phone won’t make any call and keeps displaying ’call failed’ until I toggle on and off Airplane mode.

(b) During the same time I won’t receive any calls either.

Toggling on and off Airplane mode fixes the problem temporarily until it randomly(and frequently) happens the next time.

I tweeted about this issue and got immediate response from both Verizon and Apple. Both were useless. I tried what someone on this thread suggested and I turned off wifi calling which has solved the problem nearly completely, although I do drop calls from time to time. It’s not anywhere near as bad as before when I’d drop 100% of calls at the 4-5 min mark. So I’ve solved one problem by creating a new one—very problematic to not be able to use WiFi calling!

It looks like the recent software update by apple on my iphone 12 pro disabled call forwarding hence my phone started sending in coming calls to voicemail or not allowing to receive calls

when I contacted my service provider to remove call forwarding from my plan . The phone started behaving normal so far. I still have to watch what other software in my iPhone have been effected. I have noticed that on MacBook pro

the update change settings on apple mail.

Hope apple engineer test that upgrade do not cause unnecessary change in settings. Apple is a

excellent product maker. But lately things at apple support area are not going well

Update: y'all will not believe what my problem was. I had a corrupt file as a ringtone. I like to make ringtones and import them from my Mac, and my most recent one happened to be a bad apple from the bunch. I'm not 100% sure this solved my issue since my Apple advisor and I inspected several settings, but this one seems to stick out the most. Worth a try changing your ringtone for the sake of consumer-level experimentation!

I’m not sure if there is an issue in certain areas with Verizon (I have Verizon and I haven’t had any issues with my 12 Pro Max or the other 2 in our home being able to make or receive calls or texts. Nor has anyone that I know in my area so far mentioned having an issue so I’m not sure if it depends on where you’re at). I know the only issue we had briefly is when my mom used her old SIM card and she was getting 5G like I was in the same spot. We called Verizon and after a little troubleshooting we were asked to remove her SIM card. That’s when I realized she didn’t use the 5G labeled one that came with the phone and just used her old one. Swapped it out real quick and 5G immediately showed. She hasn’t had any other issues. We live in west central Georgia not far from the Alabama line (separated by the Chattahoochee river). Not saying it’s not an issue with the phone. But from last issues I’m more willing it’s an issue with Verizon needing to update something in the system or correct a provision (we’ve had issues like that in the past and took a ton of people before someone who actually knew what to do could be found). Sometimes it can be frustrating dealing with Verizon trying to get help and it ends up being a lot of back and forth.

If you all haven’t already tried talking to Apple about the issue and had them look at the device definitely do that. If they determine it’s the device they might swap it out. But if the issue continues it might be Verizon. If you can briefly activate the eSIM with another carrier (like with a prepaid card) try that with the Verizon SIM not being in the device and see if you have the same issues with test calls.
