iPhone 12 Pro - Call Failed - Verizon

I've had my new 12 Pro for 1 day and cannot make or receive calls. Receive "call failed" message. Can receive and make texts as well as email. Verizon says it is related to 5G outage but it doesn't make sense since LTE and WiFi calling don't work. Anyone having similar issues?

I wanted to update everyone who has been following these post. Verizon was nice enough to send me a new iPhone (12 Pro.)

When I got it today, all I did was activate the cell service over wifi. I did not put any apps or personal data on the phone. It came with software version 14.2.1 I did not update it to 14.3. I turned off automatic updates. Which also in on by default. I made sure Wifi calling was on. (by default its on)

I started to call. Did not drop a single call. It was happening on my older (2) 12pro's every 3 -5 min. I haven't mad 100's of calls yet. But is seems the problem is not there. So it seems to be the update process. Not the update or the Version. My old phones worked fine. My first phone came with a version less then 14.2.1. I updated it to 14.2.1 as soon as I did Wifi calling started to drop. My second came with 14.2.1 it worked fine. As soon as I updated it to 14.3 it started to drop calls.

This phone (which is my third) came with 14.2.1 so far it works fine. I will not update it to 14.3

So again, I think it is the update process that is causing Wifi calling to break. As I make more calls, I will update everyone.

@hbudovsky

That's a bummer. I just logged in to report that after restoring from my computer as you suggested, it seemed to FIX my issue. I had a 12 minute call and a 16 minute call today and there were no "called failed" issues. These are the first calls of significant length since I owned the phone that didn't fail.

I did try to "Reset Network Settings" which was suggested in another post and that did NOT fix the issue.

Anyway from my perspective your fix (restore from computer) did seem to resolve my issue. (at least for the moment) If that changes I will report back here.

Well, a lot of people with 14.1, 14.2 and 14.2.1 DO have the problem, so either your wife is lucky or the root cause of the problem has nothing to do with the version. Given that the problem is almost exclusively with Verizon that might be a factor to consider.

What about SIM cards? Are you and your wife’s both new SIMs issued by Verizon?

Have you updated your phone using your computer, rather than over the air? From reading the other messages in the thread that has fixed it for most people who have done that.

I just read a PC magazine article about this issue, and the conclusion there was that it was a 5G issue. Try turning off your 5G and see if that makes a difference. I'm not sure what settings you may have in Cellular data on the Verizon device, but on my AT&T phone, I can see under Voice & Data to select 5G On, 5G Auto, or LTE. Try using the LTE selection and see what happens.

@hbudovsky FWIW I had the same issue (as reported earlier in this thread). However, after preforming the procedure you recommended (Restore using computer) I have NOT had the issue repeat. I must be one of the lucky ones. I was seeing the called failed issue after 3-5 mins on EVERY call along with random Call Failed issues when trying to place a call. None of that has happened since I restored on my PC via iTunes.

Sorry to hear you're still having issues and thank you for your recommended procedure. I also appreciate you keeping us up to date.

Actually I found the possibly solution, I just reset all the settings on last weekend, not erase the data, it’s been nearly a week, so far so good. I think this issue possibly caused by the new phone did iCloud recovery from the old phone setting, some how some settings are different or conflict to each other. Anyway try that way if it works please let everyone know here.

Putting the phone in airplane mode will not work. Wifi calling still drop calls after 3-5 min.

tuning off Wifi calling and using only cellular does work. If you need WiFi calling the iPhone 12 Pro will not work. And it is a problem with both Verizon and AT&T.

I have the problem for 4 weeks. You can read all my posts. Apple says they are working on it. Not really sure they are. Get a Samsung.

I’m in AUSTRALIA and using Kogan plan(Vodafone line), I have the same issue but not with wifi call, just can’t make calls and receive calls all the time, the signal will turn into 3G when make calls or if any one calling me, but the phone has no response to it. Also I found when this issue comes the wireless charge is not working well, I have tried to reset the network or put on aeroplane mode but not working, every time I need to restart the phone to make and receive the calls, and happens again in a day or 2. Looks like it’s the phone issue, have talk to support team but still in troubleshooting stage, hope the software update can fix this issue in future, hope it’s not the hardware issue.

It really seems to be an Apple problem. I asked Verizon to replace my phone. I had a 12pro. My wife has a 12proMax. She has had very few problems if any. So Verizon took back my 12pro (which you can do in the first 30 days) gave me back my money. I then purchased a new 12proMax. Yes more money. I must say, very few drops on wifi calling. Today on hold for 1.5 hours.

Not sure why! Maybe bigger antenna in the bigger phone. But just guessing. We have always has the same IOS in the 12pro and then Max.

As I have been testing this for the past hour or so, I have made some observations.

The problem I have had is after about 5 minutes, WiFi calling stops working, and I am no longer able to make calls out. That, however, does not appear to be the case now.

What I am current seeing is when I make a phone call out, sometimes the phone decides my cellular connection is strong enough to make the call, and it drops off wifi calling. However, sometimes that isn’t true (the LTE signal is very weak), and it isn’t able to connect the call. After getting a call failed message, it connects back to Wifi calling instantly.

So the way the phone tries to prioritize the call with the new network isn’t always accurate. As a test, I am changing the network selection settings in “cellular” from automatic to manual. I’m wondering if that prevents the phone from bouncing around so much.
