internet install

Have erased disk on iMac

trying to reinstall operating system (Catalina)from the web

long story/short I have stuffed up

now can only get black screen with flashing file icon with a question mark

please help this dumb Aussie

With computer Off, turn On and Immediately hold the three key combination Command + Options + R. It may be better if using a USB keyboard and mouse but can be done with Bluetooth devices. It will seek a Wifi connection or if connected to Hard Wired connection is best and faster. The Apple Globe will appear after some time ( this is called Internet Recovery Mode ). Once that is loaded, in Menu Bar choose Utilities and Disk Utilities. Choose internal drive and choose to Erase it. Make sure to choose APFS Format and GUID ( Journaled ) Partition Scheme. Once that is done, back out of Disk Utilities. It will present Install a New MacOS. It will start downloading the Full Installation ( about 8.5 GB ). Once it is finished it will automatically start the installation process.
