iPad 'Cannot verify server identity' error

How do I fix this extremely annoying error message? Sending and receiving mail does not seem to be affected, but starting yesterday for no reason this message keepspopping up. I’ve rebooted to no avail.

I found a simple fix for this issue on my phone. If you have the same settings as I do, it might work for you, too.

Settings—->Passwords & Accounts

—->Choose the offending (Hotmail/Outlook/Live, etc) account

—>Account (email address)—>under Outgoing Mail Server, click on SMTP. If your settings look like mine below, I clicked ‘OFF’ the Primary Server smtp-mail.outlook.com....leaving smtp.live.com ‘ON’.

I don’t know why this worked, as I didn’t change the actual offending Incoming Mail Server, but my phone fetched my mail just fine after I did this. Maybe it’s because the Incoming and Outgoing server names no longer match?

I hope this helps someone else. I really didn’t want to go through the whole ‘delete account’ process!

This is absolutely maddening! I've been having this problem for a few months and no matter what I do it always returns. I've deleted my email accounts and re-added them several times and disabled all mail notifications, I don't know what to do. When it's happening it makes my phone unusable. I'm still on an iPhone 7 and am looking to upgrade, but I can't justify spending $1,000+ on a device that I can't use because Apple refuses to resolve this problem. Sorry for the rant, I'm just really annoyed.

It is happening with my iPhone11, so upgrading is unlikely to solve the issue. It’s an iOS issue that Apple can not seem to fix, or doesn’t place any priority on it because it is not affecting a high enough percentage of users. Apple Care has thus far failed in their tech support efforts. The problem typically happens to me when Cellular is in use. I don’t think it has reared its head for me when I’m on a wifi network, but not 100% sure. But it is maddening when you spend so much on an iPhone and Apple support can’t quickly remedy a problem that renders the phone almost useless when it happens. We need a definite answer Apple, are you there?

This problem continues to occur randomly when I am using Cellular. As documented by many others with the same issue, it renders the iPhone (11) almost useless, interrupting all flow of texting/emailing or basic use of internet. Apple Care thus far has failed to solve the problem and it is super disappointing that an expensive Apple product like this has an ongoing flaw that Apple barely acknowledges or shows any real interest in rectifying. All the various suggestions, from deleting/re-installing Mail (Operating System) have not been effective. In fact Apple just sent me a new replacement iPhone 11 for a different problem and this issue has reared its head again on this new phone. Very bummed about Apple because of it.

A number of posts their mail server are not ' Outlook' , mine is one of them.

Obviously contacting Microsoft will not solve ALL the problems.

I deleted the mail account in Setting & recreated it as suggested by a member here, but about 2 weeks later the same error popped up again. Amazed why it was ok for a while.

This error prompt is very disruptive as I am active in Apple Mail app. Don't have this problem before ios 14. Hope that Apple Support experts can give their advice here.

This has just started out of nowhere on my wifes iPad with a mail3@gridhost message via wifi (though it also has a cellular connection) but both accounts on the iPad were gMail ones, so it looks like a saved e mail was trying to respond to a source email?

Just deleted both accounts from the iPad and issue resolved, but why it suddenly appeared, that is the big question that no one yet seems to have found an answer for?

When you are setting up your hotmail account don’t use Outlook server but pick Other and than use your e-mail address and password (Microsoft may give you applications password instead of your regular password, use that one ). Once you do that you can delete your hotmail account that you setup as Outlook and use this new one. Problem solved but you may lose some contacts when you delete hotmail/outlook account
