Vizio TV as external monitor

Trying to connect a Vizio D32hn-E4 TV as a monitor to MacBook Air using a mini port. The adapter is new, the cables are good. When I go to display the arrangement tab is not visible. I have followed the instructions to select the option button, but it still does not recognize the TV. I have wasted so much time and can not get it set up. Trying to use to help work at home. This set up has worked when using Apple TV in the office. I just want to use the TV as a monitor. Thoughts?
