Pop up warnings that feeel like malware

I keep getting this warning: “ProductImprovementStudy.hptask” will damage your computer." It appears like a pop up in the middle of my screen. I do have a wireless HP printer, but have not downloaded anything new in a long time. I've deleted all HP applications and the utility. This still happens. How do I get rid of it and any potential malware residing in my laptop? Thanks!

You will find that file in the following folder:

~Library/LaunchAgents

To open that folder, copy the entire line above and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field.

Make it look like this:

... and click the Go button.

A Finder window will open. Locate the file com.hp.devicemonitor.plist and drag it to the Trash.

You may also find the following in that folder. You can drag them to the trash also.

ProductImprovementStudy

ScanEventHandler

HPDeviceMonitoring

FaxArchive
