The camera on my new iphone 12 is silent. How can I turn the shutter sound on?

If you are using Live Photos, there will not be a shutter sound. So, to hear the shutter you would need to turn that off. Also, if your phone is on Mute, you will not hear a shutter sound unless you are using a phone designed to be used in one of the many countries that do not allow for the shutter sound to be muted. You also need to have the the volume turned up a bit.

Close the camera app, then force restart the iPhone. See if that helps. Force restart iPhone - Apple Support You understand there are two volume controls, Ringer and Media. Depending on what screen you are in as to what is adjusted if you are using the buttons on the side, and what settings you have in Sounds.
