iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

@Prakashparis, the theory of "latest batch" rectifying the issue is false.

I asked on this forum(Page 82) and on macrumors about the latest 2021 January manufactured devices, and if they are still facing this issue.

And as expected they are facing the issue on these latest manufactured devices.

On Macrumours one person has received 3 iPhones manufactured in 3rd week January 2021 and all of them has raised black issue.

@dhakku

I know about this YouTuber you are talking about and have been following his videos regarding this issue.

He clearly mentioned, as per the diagnostic test his display was faulty, so the Repair centre has replaced it, had it not been caught on the diagnostic test they would have refuse the repair.

Few pages back, another user from India has submitted his device "twice" with the service centre, but was refused the display replacement because they couldn't find any fault with the panel.

And as mentioned by @Micaltech that in his country, until it shows up on the diagnostic test or Apple declare it as a hardware defect, Repair centre won't replace the display or the phone.

I want to reiterate once again, all the reports that "newer batches have solved the raised black issue" are absolutely false, I have confirmed on various forums about this issue and even the latest "3rd week January 2021" produced device has exhibited the raised black and green tint issue.

Going to definitely wait for iPhone 13 or maybe get a Pixel 4a until then since seems screen quality took major hit with the iPhone 12, guessing cause of pandemic, which is causing issue that started this thread.

Looks like the iPhone XS is the best phone screen Apple ever made infinite OLED contrast with excellent color accuracy and excellent gray scale which you need for color accuracy so make sense! So if you got an XS I"d hold on to it or even an iPhone 11 since it is almost as good. Also, the iPhone SE 2020 which I went back to is right behind the XS and the iPhone 11 so will also be happy with the screen quality and not have or see the issues in this long thread!

Sad that even the old iPhone 6s colors are more accurate than the iPhone 12 which is totally unacceptable!

You would think it'd be at least as good or better than the previous iPhone but it's obvious from these numbers that there are major quality issues with where Apple is getting their phone OLED panels compared to the XS since the XS is proof that you can have a perfect OLED that is as good or better than older LCD tech like in iPhone 6s!

That's also why you don't want to compare your iPhone 12 next to an XS because as we have seen in pics others have posted here you'll see how much worse the iPhone 12 is and notice the green tints the darker the screen gets since greyscale is so bad on the iPhone 12 in comparison!

I have an update.

Few weeks back I posted about my iPhone 12 Pro being serviced by a certified Apple service provider (iDeal) regarding the raised blacks issue and flickering in videos. Back then I got my device back with the official response from them that this is a software issue and that Apple is working on a fix. My device was running iOS 14.4 and like everybody else blacks were being lit up and turned to black again few secs later, also when watching a completely black Youtube video the screen was flickering gray-black.

Then I got frustrated and sold my phone few days after it was back from the service provider. Now reading that this indeed might be fixable with software I wanted to give Apple one more chance.

2 days ago I purchased a brand new blue iPhone 12 Pro Max (not Pro). Today I did the setup and automatically updated to iOS 14.4. After the setup was complete ofc I immediately wanted to see if the problem is there and TO MY SURPRISE there is absolutely no issues with the display!!!

The blacks are absolutely black (pixels off) at every brightness setting! The videos are not flickering anymore in Youtube and are completely black!

I dont know if this has anything to do with this being the Pro Max and not the Pro but Im 100% confirming that the display is absolutely without flaws running iOS 14.4.

This makes me think that the service provider was lying and that this indeed is a hardware defect because my Pro was purchased right at launch day.

So I got a 12 pro max 256 and the Apple logo would flicker on for less than a second then turn off..... and when using the phone in my bedroom at night at lowest brightness the grey tiles on dark mode appear to be a blue color my iPad isn’t the best in low light so anyway I returned the graphite 256 max and went to Apple and got the same thing in gold.... this one is even more blue.... at least the Apple logo doesn’t flicker.... but the blue is worse and yes I did a software recovery on the Apple logo flicker device and it still flickered afterwards. I’m glad I got Apple care but I’m noticing these things very early. If the Apple store was closer I’d be there every day which is very unfortunate Sad part is when my phone is on lowest brightness both pictures look the same....

I have a 12 pro max. I have the issue but only after updating to 14.2. The pro max ships with 14.1 and I didn’t have the issue. Because of how wide scale this issue is, I have confidence that it’s a Software issue, as apples quality control should have noticed this because of how widespread this is, it’s occurring on all iPhone 12 models. Apple Support have no idea what it is, so I think the amount it’s probably already been raised it will be fixed. 14.3 beta probably minimised the issue but Apple should promptly push a 0.0.1 update to fix this.

I can’t say for certain if it is not a hardware issue, but because of how wide scale this is on all models of the iPhone 12 and by the look of it only occurring on 14.2+, I think it’s probably a software issue. Still very annoying though

Just got my iPhone 12 pro max replaced by Apple, they gave me a replacement unit which they said was "Re-Manufactured" but Im assuming with how new the Pro Max's are that its essentially a Brand New iPhone.

Currently I dont see any screen grey flashing with Autobrightness disabled, even when the screen is in motion. I will report back if anything changes but very interesting in that it could be a hardware issue.

After few days with the max, I still have no issue with it. Absolutely no glowing on static pictures. Everthing was compared to the (old) 12 pro. The old one was be send back yesterday.

Hope Apple can fix the very slightly flickering, that still there.

I still believe on two issues.

Glowing seems to be an hardware problem, the evidence is given by my comparison between (new) 12 pro max and (old) 12 pro.

Flickering is better but still there, maybe this is an second issue and maybe could be fix with SW.

We will see. Now I have again still some days for a return, if necessary.

I'm pretty sure it actually is software. When you restart your phone in the dark, the Apple logo appears against pure black, and then a few seconds later, the green glow appears right before it shows the lock screen.

This would suggest that the OLED panel itself is fine. During boot, it displays pure black, and once the OS takes over, the blacks are raised.

As I said in a previous post, I believe apple rather stupidly did this on purpose to prevent smearing and ghosting, thinking no one would notice, not realizing people like to use their phones in the dark.
