How do I "set up" the AirPort Express to extend my network. I have connected an Ethernet cable from the Hitron WiFi Modem to the AirPort Express WAN "O" port.

Hi,

I am retiring my Time Capsule and want to direct connect my Airport Express to my Hitron CGMN-2250 Router supplied by Shaw. I have removed my Time Capsule Base Station from the network and plugged the Airport Express box directly into the Hitron via ethernet cable. Currently my Airport Express Utility shows me that it is connected. I am wondering if I should use the reset button to completely reconfigure the Airport Express to extend my network.

If the Ethernet cable is already plugged into the WAN (circle of dots) port......

Power up the AirPort Express and let it run for a minute or two

Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort Express for 7-8 seconds and release

Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status

Click on the WiFi menu at the top of the iMac's screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station

Under that listing, click directly on AirPort Express

When you click on AirPort Express, that will start up the AirPort Utility setup "wizard"

The wizard will take a few seconds to analyze the network and then display a screen that looks like the example below, except that you will see your version of the Express pictured

Network Name......Edit the box to enter the exact same wireless network name that the Hitron router is using

Base Station Name.......Enter a simple short device name for the AirPort Express

Password.......Enter the exact same wireless network password that the Hitron router is using

Verify......Enter the same password again to confirm

Click Next, and the setup wizard will automatically configure the Express with the correct settings

When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done........and you are done.

Just want to make sure that you are aware that the Ethernet cable that connects the AirPort Express to the Hitron router must remain permanently connected at all times, so hopefully the Ethernet cable is long enough to allow you to locate the AirPort Express a few rooms or so away from the Hitron router......in an area where you need more WiFi signal coverage.

Next item......the AirPort Express has only 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, so the maximum speed that the Express will be able to provide a WiFi signal will be 100 Mbps. Realistically, it will likely be in the 80-90 Mbps range. So, if you have one of the newer high speed Internet connection plans, the Express will significantly slow things down.

We'll provide the steps to set up the Express, but need to know what device.......a Mac, a PC, or an iPhone / iPad.......you be using the reconfigure the AirPort Express. We ask because the set up is different, depending on which of these devices you will be using.
