Unable to connect iPhone with IOS14 to my desktop with Mojave.

Unable to connect iPhone with new IOS14 to my desktop with Mojave. Error message says 'A software update is required" but doesn't say what. I don't wish to update my desktop OS as it will kill some essential 32bit apps. What is the software update required? Is this a trap?

No.

Then don't update.

That is normal and will not install Catalina. See this article

If you see "Software update is required to connect to your iOS device" on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I had that recently when I upgraded an iPad to iPadOS 14 using iTunes on my iMac running Mojave. The download is small and took maybe two minutes to install. It appears to patchiTunes to allow you to continue to do backups, upgrades, and synching of your idevice through iTunes as before.

The download is NOT a system software upgrade. I had Mojave when I allowed the patch and I still have Mojave. No problem. I also applied it to another Macs running High Sierra and its still has the same OS version.
