When I try to stream HBO Max on my MacBook to my apple TV via airplay - the actual video won't play, I have a black screen with audio. When I turn off airplay it plays on my MacBook no problem. I have no issue with my iPad streaming HBO Max via AirPlay on the same TV, just when it's the MacBook.

HBO has chosen to support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad to an AirPlay 2-compatible device. That excludes other AirPlay scenarios. Fully disclosed:

It works as intended.
Content providers can choose to block airplay as it bypass the hdcp drm which they use to protect their content from being copied
At this point get a Firestick. HBOMAX is now available on firestick and much easier than screen mirroring.
Hmm, not downloading a show, just trying to stream it from my M1 MacBook Air to updated TCL rook tv. It mirrors the screen fine, but just audio not video playback.
This does not work.
Does Apple know their MacBook technology doesn't work with HBOMAX? I'd think that would be front and center in any disclosure to the viewing public.
On an iPhone I figured out the if you downloaded the hbo max show, the video is blacked out, audio only. If you just hit play and stream it, the screen mirroring works.
