Control Apple music from multiple devices

I have just started a trial of Apple Music on a Student plan. I have a number of Apple devices all signed into the same Apple ID I want to be able to use these devices to control the music that is playing on a Home connected device. I have found many articles about needing the Family Subscription if I want to play things on different devices at the same time. I do not want to do that. I only want to play on one device and stream to my Homepod or bluetooth speaker. But if I start playing music on my iPad which I have set up in the kitchen I can not seem to control (stop, pause, or change play lists) what is playing from my phone which I may have on me in my bedroom. This is all one Apple ID I do not understand why when all are signed in together and I have the music playing through a Home connected device I can not switch control between these connected devices.

This is a basic feature of Spotify I do not not understand what I am doing wrong and why this is so hard to set up
