installing watchOS 7.1

I'm having a problem installing watchOS 7.1 on my apple watch 4. It fails half way through the preparing, giving an error saying I'm not connected to the internet. I check and I am connected. I tried turning off wifi on the watch and downloading from the watch, same failure. I tried downloading from the watch app and still got the same error. Please help.

I’ve only got a series 3 (gps only) and it came up with the same suggested issue. I had checked the Wi-fi, etc and could find no problems with it.

Eventually I had to reset the watch as if it was a new one before I upgraded it.

It took a few minutes to do and also when setting everything up as I wanted again but at least it upgraded properly.

I think it’s because mine has lower memory than later versions. What it can’t just say so, instead of putting up irrelevant information, I’m not sure.

I bought a watch se for my partner, having lost faith in the s3 I have, and sent the first one I’d got her back to apple (though now apple seem to have sorted that problem, at least with mine, by updating software properly).

I couldn’t get her new watch to update with her phone (an iPhone 7).

Eventually I unpaired it, paired it with my phone (a fairly new se) and the update did work.

Once that was done, I again unpaired it from mine and started the whole process again with her phone, as her watch.

So far it’s been fine since then.

You are not alone, same situation with watch v4, I have tried about ten times using various approaches. None of the official support suggestions help, the download works fine but the installation fails at about one third of the process with a complaint that there is no internet connection for verification. The iPhone 7 on 14.2 has a strong wifi connections and is on the same 2.4 ghz SSID as the watch, the watch connection at that point cannot be checked. I suspect that the watch is looking for a direct connection to Apple to verify ownership but the required wifi driver has not been installed. However I am not in Russia or Korea so from what I read in the release notes there is not much benefit for me. It certainly is not worth being on the phone with Apple support for an hour even though the watch is less than a month in service.

It is not just “us” but there are so few of us here and on the internet in general that it would seem to be a relatively rare problem. 2017 sales in theory were 33 million but Apple does not release unit sales figures. If it were a more common issue, or if it was an iPhone or iPad issue I believe a fix would be top priority. Considering that it is comparatively uncommon we are stuck with a “ get a round tuit” attitude.
