how to set default iPhone / ipad backups to "this Mac" ???

I've asked this question somewhat differently before and have never received a reply, so let me try to restate what I'm interested in.

I'm using a MBP 16 with Catalina 10.15.7 and now an iPhone 12P and iPad Pro 2 years old both with latest iOS updates (but this started a while ago)

when I open the new sync page in Finder I cannot make the back up default to THIS MAC for all data back up...every single time I close the page and reopen it, it reverts to Backup Important Data to iCloud --which I do not want. Is there a setting to change to make the complete back up to my Mac the default?

thanks,

Tom O'Connell

Hello SausalitoDog,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're looking to change the default backup option, when backing up your iPhone to your Mac. Do you currently have iCloud Backups enabled on your iOS devices? If you're not sure check in Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Backup. If it is, you might try disabling it to see if that impacts the default on your Mac.

Thanks, Katrina

Your advice makes sense but i just checked the settings on my iPhone and it has been set at iCloud_Backup = OFF

For a while I thought it was just a quirk in my setup and that maybe iOS 14 would fix it but it didn't and the same problem occurs on my wife's iPhone since the new OS was launched.

We both like the idea of the occasional iCloud backup but want a complete backup on our macs (not just "important" files :-)

Any other ideas?

thanks again...yours is the most sensible reply I've had so far ...

cheers,

tom
