SMB issue in iPadOS 14

My iPad Air 2 is running iPadOS 14. However, since I updated to iPadOS 14, I can no longer access my NAS in the files app. It worked perfectly fine in iPadOS 13, but in this update, the files app does not want to have a bar of it. I get the following errors:

There was a problem connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator.

If I try again, I receive a similar error. The IP address of the NAS is 192.168.1.253. I have done the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Turn everything off (iPad, NAS, Router) and turn back on again
  • Taking the static IP of the NAS of the DHCP reserve list and make it get another IP address
  • Add another static IP of a different address

The NAS is a Western Digital My Cloud Home and as I mentioned before, it was working perfectly fine in iPadOS 13. It works fine with the latest version of macOS Catalina (10.15.7). It also seems to work perfectly fine when using the VLC App on the iPad. So I am confident that this issue is affecting the iPadOS Files app. Again, it worked fine up until I updated to iPadOS 14. I am currently on the latest version of iPadOS 14, (iPadOS 14.2). Please help me!

Having updated to iPadOS 14 (noting that iPadOS 14.2 is current), you may not have noticed a new security feature - Private Address - that masks your true hardware MAC Address.

Use private Wi-Fi addresses in iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and watchOS 7 – Apple Support

When Private Address is enabled (as by default it is) your hardware MAC address is replaced with a randomly assigned MAC address. This change to your MAC address may impact the DHCP-assigned IP Address of your iPad - and associated network ARP tables.

You may find that a restart of your network devices, or disabling Private Addresses (from iPad Settings) for your local WiFi network may resolve connectivity problems after updating to iPadOS 14.x You’ll need to restart your network devices in the correct order. Assuming that you WiFi Router provides DNS services for your network, restart devices in this order - allowing time for devices to fully boot/restart prior to restarting other devices:

  • WiFi Router
  • Upstream wired Network Switch(es)
  • WiFi Access Points / Network Extenders
  • Other fixed infrastructure devices - such as Printers and NAS storage
  • Client devices

I hope this information and guidance proves to be helpful in resolving any difficulties.
