New iPhone 12 volume buttons toggle silent mode

A friend bought a new iPhone 12 yesterday and we find that the volume buttons are toggling “silent mode” on and off rather than adjusting the volume.

I never seen this behaviour and can find nothing about it on Google.

How did we return the volume buttons behaviour to normal and adjusting the volume?

iPhone SE 2020 Volume Buttons If the phone rings to loud I am in the habit of hitting the volume down button. On my SE this completely mutes the volume and unless I do something immediately (which I may not be able to do) it will remain that way till I miss the next call due to no volume and see it in my recents. I do go into settings and reset the volume...till the next time. I know of the silent/mute button right above the volume buttons. That is NOT the problem. I have tested the button in settings (Change with Buttons) both ways and this does not change the above. This may be an operator issue! Thanks in advance for any help or direction in this matter. Ed

Where is the volume Indicator on iphone 11?? I recently purchased an iPhone 11 and when I use the volume buttons on the side of the phone, I am not seeing a volume indicator anywhere on my screen (either when the phone is locked or unlocked). The only indicator I receive is "Silent Mode is Off". I have no idea how low or high the volume is until someone calls or texts. Interestingly, I DO receive the volume indicator when I use the same buttons while Instagram is open. What am I missing??? (Note: I know that I can see & adjust the volume from the control center, but I shouldn't have to take this step, right?)

Issue seems to have resolved itself after updating to iOS 14.2 which of course causes the phone to restart. Quite possibly switching the phone off and on again may very well have fixed this issue as well.

Have never seen this problem with an iPhone previously.
