Smart Keyboard Delete Key Not Working

Ever since the most recent software update, the delete key on my Apple Smart Keyboard no longer works to delete emails in Apple’s native mail app. It’s SUPER frustrating. I read a tip from 2017 that said if you go to the search bar and type something and then delete it, the delete key would start working again. Apparently this no longer works. Is anyone else having this problem?

What is the exact OS version currently running on your iPad? Settings > General > About.

I am currently running iPadOS version 14.2. After posting this question, I did more internet research and it seems that in the most recent software update, apple removed the functionality of the delete key in their native mail app. The fact that the delete key still works in other apps lends some credence to this.
