face id when driving

I plan to get the iPhone 12 Mini soon. I've never had a Face ID phone - I'm currently using the 6S. I googled but found no info, so I'm asking here: let's say my phone is off (not totally off), & I'm driving somewhere & suddenly realize I need directions. I ask Siri for directions, but she says "...but you'll have to open your iPhone first." When that would happen with my 6S, I could feel my way to the home button & open it that way, but of course the 12 Mini doesn't have a home button. It's definitely not safe to use Face ID when driving - so how will this work? Did Apple take this into account? Any info or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I have an iOttie phone mount in my vehicle and the phone faces me so that I can use Waze while driving. If my phone is in the mount and I say, "Hey Siri open Waze", my iPhone 11 Pro can see my face and it unlocks using Face ID without issue. So just in my experience, it can see your face and unlock without issue. I don't have to take my eyes off the road or grab the phone from the mount and bring it closer to my face. Just my $0.02.

Honestly I think the only workaround is to have my phone already unlocked when driving. I don't want to do that, but so far it's the only way I've found. I did speak to someone at Apple when I had my free 20 minute chat after getting my phone, & I asked about it, & the guy said it was a safety feature. I get that, but it still doesn't make sense to me that I can't use my voice commands for texting (voice to text), or to get Siri to read my text, or most importantly to get directions WHILE driving!!
