Bluetooth in car disconnects and reconnects repeatedly

Bluetooth in our 2017 Nissan Leaf disconnects and reconnects every few seconds, repeatedly, when using Apple Music v3.4.0, but not other audio apps or phone calls. My wife and I both have a Moto X4 (Android 9; Oct 2020 patches installed) and have experienced the same behavior. This just started in the last few days. First it was just with my phone, but now my wife's does it.


Initially I thought our head unit was flaking out, but then realized it only happens with Apple Music. I'd assumed Apple Music wouldn't even have access to the BT radio, but maybe that's incorrect. Weirdly, no issues with BT headphones. I have unpaired my phone (i.e., deleted from both car and phone) and re-paired with no change. Rebooted the phone and pulled the fuse for the radio (Bluetooth is in the head unit), too. This has happened with both of us in the car and each of us individually.


Help!

Since the issue occurs with two different phones, in the same car, but does not occur when using Bluetooth headphones, it sounds like the issue can be isolated to the car stereo or Bluetooth system.


You’ll want to get in touch with the vehicle manufacturer for help with the system. You may need to install a firmware update. These steps may help you troubleshoot Bluetooth on your Android devices: Bluetooth - moto x4. We hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I initially suspected the car's Bluetooth, but I can't think of a single instance of this happening over the last 3+ years with any app other than Apple Music. We've had the current phones for almost two years with no such behavior for either of us. Or our previous phones. I've used 5-6 other audio apps over that time without issue. I tried other apps since the problem cropped up with nary an issue. We make and take calls in the car regularly and nothing like this.


So if it were truly some bug with the car's BT firmware, it's exceedingly strange that it would have only ever happened with Apple Music.
