Use a New App Password:

So, do you use an app password for your eMail? If so, whomever your eMail provider is, visit their site, and create a new App Password. You would remove the eMail account, and sign back in, using the App Password you just created.

In ios13 and earlier, the password could be changed on three phone without the delete and re-add step. There has gotta be a way to just change a password."

Do your Part: Using another computer or portable device, provide Apple with feedback on this. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more they hear of this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed.

FWIW, Apple's mail programs on the iPhone and Mac will ask for a password no matter what the problem. They don't distinguish among the various errors which can occur when checking mail.

As for the delete and re-add account game: this is one step worse than the MS Windows restart-the-machine game.

That is what the advice was. In ios13 and earlier, the password could be changed on three phone without the delete and re-add step.

There has gotta be a way to just change a password.
