"an error occurred while installing this update" while upgrading Big Sur on MacBook Pro Early 2015


Downloaded 12.18 GB in an hour and it got stuck for next half an hour and gave me error "an error occurred while installing this update". Restarted the upgrade again, got stuck at 2.44 GB for 15 minutes. Rebooted my mac and started the upgrade again and got stuck again at 2.44 GB (attaching the screenshot).

Ok got it working and downloaded

These are the steps I did.

Deleted the following:

Go to

Library

Preferences

Delete “com.Apple.softwareUpdate.plist”

Empty Trash

Restart Computer

Select The Apple Top Left

Go to about this Mac

Select Software Update

Same problem here. Macbook Air 2015 model.


I even downloaded the Big Sur installation from the Mac App Store using a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 model running the latest Catalina update.


Created a bootable USB installation drive of Big Sur.


Booted the Macbook Air from USB and ran the install. Still get the same issues presented in your screenshots.


Currently creating a Catalina Bootable USB Drive and reinstalling that. So far this has been a **** of a rid on friday the 13th.

I am surprised this isn't even solved yet especially for a company with Apple's magnitude.
