Apple Watch cannot open Mac and/or Sidecar doesn't work over WiFi

If Apple Watch cannot open Mac and/or Sidecar doesn't work over WiFi after upgrading to the Big Sur sign out of AppleID and sign in back will fix it.

I had trouble with unlocking with apple watch after the upgrade - the same "watch not communicating.." message. I unpaired and re-paired the watch and rebooted which fixed it. Then I installed avira anti-virus and once again the watch wouldn’t unlock so I uninstalled the anti-virus and the watch worked again. Does anybody know an AV app which will work with apple watch unlocking?

I've tried many solutions for this "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch." issue, like deleting 'Auto Unlock' stuff from the Keychain Access, turning off/on Keychain in the iCloud settings, signing out/in from my Apple ID on my Mac… but these tricks did not solve it for me.


Finally I unpaired/paired my Apple Watch and the "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac" option worked (after checking the checkbox twice). Pfhew…
