Yes, pristine copy WITHOUT restoring anything. Same problem.

OK.

So. You have claimed that you did «wip[e] the boot drive» before installing a version of Big Sur. Right?

You then installed a pristine copy of Big Sur, «WITHOUT restoring anything.»

Yet. You experienced the «Same problem» of «battery drain.»

Were you able to demonstrate all of this to the Apple people you worked with, recently?

If so, then all that can be done has been done. Right?

I, and many others, have never had any problems upgrading my Operating Systems (OSs)!

However. I (along with those others) have always done my due diligence: making sure all my software and add-on hardware was compatible with the new OS., before upgrading.

… I changed a new iPhone battery, and it works not like a new one, batter drained there.

This is a separate iPhone issue. It will be better addressed within a different, and more appropriate Discussion.

I was finally able to demonstrate the battery drain issue to Apple Care. (btw, STILL the exact same problem, battery drain 1% a minute). They now have a disk image, looking forward to their reply.

The question was not so much about «the battery drain issue», but the claimed “cleanliness”, or “pristine” nature of the software system you are running when «the battery drain issue» manifests.

Perhaps the «disk image» «they now have» will be sufficient to determine the claimed “cleanliness”, or “pristine” nature of the software system you are running.

Please keep us informed on followups.

Welcome, jacknbean and paomug67, to Apple Support Communities!

Good luck with «Avast», «premium edition» or otherwise.

I will pass along the long experience of long-time contributors, here, on Apple Support Communities: Anti-virus (like Avast), “optimizing”, “speed up”, “cleaning”, etc. software, on Macs are not only unnecessary, in general, but have been found to be, far too often, downright detrimental to Macs.

Take this warning as you wish, but don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Update: Apple support couldn't help. Still the same problem.

You still haven’t addressed the question of whether Apple Support could verify your «claimed “cleanliness”, or “pristine” nature of the software system you are running when «the battery drain issue» manifests.»

If this claim has not been verified, by Apple, then no-one has been helped by your reports, so far.

Big Sur 11.5.1 (20G80) after clean install: same issue... 1% every 2 minutes

What are you claiming is a truly «clean install»?

This claim is bandied about, by a tiny few, around here, but without any definitive evidence, let alone any such definitive evidence presented to Apple.

Until Apple has such definitive evidence, I will never expect any “fix” to come from any macOS update.

Note: macOS 12 is coming, just “around the corner”. I recommend all to make sure they have all issues resolved, on their Macs, before any attempt to install that new version.

Additionally, all should make sure they only run compatible software and hardware with that new version, in order to avoid any repeat issues.

Downgrade to catalina... that's what I just did

Fine.

How is your battery drain, now?

Note, also, as I wrote:

Catalina is working fine, "normal" battery drain.
What is your advice, Halliday?

You appear to be doing OK on the first count, under Catalina.

I recommend you to heed the advice on preparing for macOS 12, if you are thinking of making that transition. (This is, of course, assuming your hardware will be compatible with that new macOS.)

My MacBook Pro 15" 2017 which was working fine, upon upgrading to 11.5.1 it will no longer sleep even when case closed and the charging USB-C port I regularly used no longer works. I did a reset of NVRAM but no effect.

Was «11.5.1» the first version of Big Sur you installed, or was your «MacBook Pro 15" 2017» «working fine» on a previous version of Big Sur?

The problems you describe do not appear to include the «battery drain issue» that is the topic of this Discussion, nor do they seem to be related in any apparent way.

Jul 31, 2021 11:24 AM in response to EarthBased

While having a MacBook not going into sleep mode will lead to increased battery drain, such is not related to the issue of this Discussion, EarthBased.

However, thanks for confirming that you have been running Big Sur without trouble, until just recently, with «11.5.1».

(Of course, that, all the more, indicates that your issue is unrelated to the topic of this Discussion.)

The best recommendation, for you, is to start your own Discussion, so your issue(s) may be properly addressed. Or, you can contact Apple Support, directly, using the Get Support link, at the upper right of this page.

My battery lasts about 1.25 hours now. I would call that Battery Drain. There is nothing obvious on Activity Monitor causing this but the laptop runs noticeably warmer.

Yet, what you admitted to was that your MacBook is not going into sleep mode.

That makes it a “Sleep Mode” issue, rather than a «battery drain issue».

As I have already written, you will be far better served by creating your own Apple Support Community Help Discussion, or contacting Apple’s Support directly.
