Face Tagging / People feature is so messed up

27" iMac Late 2015 with everything updated...

Long time apple user here. Seldom do I approach the facial recognition aspect of Photos because it is so messed up historically.

Today, I decided to try yet again to organize the names, ID new photos, etc. I now remember why I do not spend much time with this feature. As I am aging, I would like to think I could spend time organizing this stuff and hopefully pass on an organized library of some kind to my grown children. I have been using OSX/Apple everything since about 2003 and have put considerable time into Aperature/iPhoto and now Photos for mac. What a joke my efforts have mostly been.

Ugh, for all they do correctly, Apple is acting like amateurs in this category of thought. You claim to be all about photos, but act like a start up company in this category. Time for change.

Apple, you need to learn a few things from social media, google, whoever. You have messed up royally on facial recognition and the general use of the people feature, what a messed up deal.

#1 - Duplicate and triplicate names appearing: I quickly end up with double or triple "albums" or circular people icons, even though I am going slow and selecting ->with the mouse<- the only available name. I type in a first name, look at the list that pops up, carefully select the name of the existing person (myself, my mom, kids, etc). Mostly works, then somehow, another album/name gets created and bam, more confusion. Once this new album/name is created, all **** breaks loose

#2 - I cannot seem to merge the two (now duplicate/triplicate) icons of people/faces. I used to be able to do this in the past in iPhoto, but nothing seems to work now with Photos for Mac 10.15.7. Why can I not merge together two people (the same person, actually - see #1)?

#3 - wrong facial recognition. I do not look like my mom. I have a beard, etc. Yet I just discovered hundreds of photos that have magically been assigned my mom's name, despite it being myself. What gives with that? The facial recognition tech on this is really random and poor. I have found no way to rectify this other than to go one photo at a time and force a new name. But then I keep ending up with multiple names of myself (and now my mom, see above).

#4 - I can NOT find my own icon/person/face circular deal on the main people page/tab option. I can only pull up my collection by typing my name in the search, then the MULTIPLE names that are myself (that I can not seem to merge any longer) show up. Yet, I can NOT see my own in the main list of names/people. What gives with this Apple? I currently have 181 people identified, although a fair number are duplicates.

#4.5 - I can not seem to organize the people names. The favorites are random, I think sorted by order entered. Why will they not organize by name? So the favorites won't organize. Now, get this: my non-favorites, the general list of people, IS sorted/organized by name ... but it is NOT organized by name. At first it is, then when it gets to the letter Z, a whole continuation occurs of randomly attached names/icons/people. Really confusing. So 3 name foci on the people page: unsorted favorites, sorted people, with the sorted people continuation on the second half with unsorted whoever.

#5 - I have tried to unname/rename/fix the erroneous names of my mom, myself, and some others. The best I can seem to do with Catalina 10.15.7 and all current everything updated, is to open the info box on an individual photo. Sometimes the little faces appear, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they match the names auto-assigned by Photos, sometimes they don't. I cannot seem to add or subtract naming via the info box, except on occasion. Every once in a while I can delete or add a face/name, but most of the time, it just doesn't do anything.

#6 - What happened to the option to 'confirm additional photos'? Not talking about the option at the bottom of a person's icon, but there used to be a general query to the effect 'you have unnamed photos, would you like to identify them now'? What happened to this option to go through unnamed photos and ID them?

#7 - I would like to have the option like most social media networks have, where one can click on a face and ID it in a photo. Nope, just can not do that. I have not found a way to force a facial tag onto a person yet except through the info tab, and that is mostly non-functional and rudimentary when it will let me even try.

I could keep going.

Apple, what gives? For all you think you are doing with photos to help us manage them, there are so many freaking bugs and problems around the whole facial recognition/tagging options, that you should seriously put some time into it and try much much harder. Really poor job. Has been for a long time. Time to fix it or just drop it. I keep spending time on it to only find out it is just an exercise in frustration.
