I just upgraded to Big Sur. My Epson printer Stylus Photo 1400 apparently doesn't have a compatible driver. Are they any plans to work with EPSON to have new drivers? The printer works great and I don't want to ditch it because of the new MacOS.

The European support site has information about the Epson Software updater and Uninstall Center only, when choosing macOS 11 (Big Sur) as the operating system:

The Epson Singapore support page on the other hand has a Big Sur driver:

Apparently, this driver, Ver.1.12 (03-2014) is used for earlier operating system versions as well.
Going back to the European site, with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) chosen as the operating system, there is a 1.14 (04-Jan-2021) driver:

So, you may have to check what the operating system or the Epson Software updater offers to begin with (after having reset the printing system, and re-added the printer). Otherwise, you may want to try one or more driver downloads. You should look upon this as an experiment. Software conflicts cannot be ruled out. You may have to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. Data can be lost. So, do not proceed unless you know what you are doing. Also, make sure that you have multiple backup copies of important files before doing anything at all.

I'm not sure what brand your print is, but mine was EPSON. I went to their support site for my model, under "drivers" I downloaded a Legacy driver (dated June of 2020). Reinstalled it. Restarted and the printer worked fine. If you don't see you printer listed in Printers in Preferences, add it back in.

ssue solved. According to this page from Epson Germany one needs to install printer driver version v10.85: https://www.epson.de/viewcon/corporatesite/kb/index/1019
However I didn't find the driver there yesterday. A search for Epson driver download v10.85 finally lead me to the international (or US?) page of Epson. I downloaded the driver from there and now it prints again.

Their system seems to be mis-identifying the currant OS so be sure to indicate 11.0 in the drop down menu. I downloaded the driver they indicate (Printer Driver v10.85). I installed the driver then I followed the suggestion above to delete the printer and then add it back on my machine. The printer now works.
If you can't find an updated driver for your printer give the open-source, free Gutenprint driver a try.
Remove the printer from System Preferences>Printers & Scanners>
Add again.

I was able to download a Legacy driver for my stylus photo 1400 and reinstall my printer. It's now working fine. I saw no documentation on EPSON site for this or on Apple, but it works!

Yeah, I just had the same issue, and thanks to this thread, I just went to the epson website and downloaded the new driver. everything working fine now.
We have a cable connecting the printer and the computer but the dialogue box had Airprint highlighted so I just went with that and it worked. We also have two laptops which we were using with the cable because we couldn’t get the bluetooth connection to work before. Now they both work with Airprint. We just did the same procedure of deleting the printer and then adding it back.

And it works fine. If you visit Epson support/drivers pick the one most similar to yours. HNY.
Orson, I don't believe Apple writes the printer drivers. I think it is up to the individual companies (Brother, HP, Epson) to create their own drivers. I'm sure Apple engineer's assist when asked.
