Using Bluebeam Revu for Mac on Big Sur

Hi - Until Big Sur, I was able to run the (no longer supported) Mac version of Bluebeam Revu on my Mac (Catalina). Now it just crashes and Bluebeam told me it would no longer work. Bluebeam stopped supporting Revu for Mac earlier this year.

Is there any chance that Apple would release an update to Big Sur that would allow this software to run again?

Otherwise I'll be looking into Parallels or Bootcamp to try to run the Windows version of Revu.

Many thanks.

Hi everyone - I just downloaded v. 1.9 from the following link:

It still runs! Depending on your needs, this may do the trick. It remembered my license info from when I bought it, and I was able to import my saved toolboxes. Thanks again to cometbjm for this suggestion!

I've been running BB 2019 on parallels and BB crashes frequently. I would spend your money on different software and avoid running a virtual. Bluebeam is likely the culprit, but I'm frustrated and here. What that other software is, I don't know yet but let me know if you have a recommendation! I originally started with On Screen Takeoff but moved to Bluebeam when it came out since cheaper and better file management for a General Contractor. The price tag of BB and me being familiar with it drew me in to buying for my new business. But now running my small business I've decided more $ can be spent to save headaches on my end and switch back to a better takeoff software. No more browsing BB forums as I've done the last few years to fix their stuff, and now it's annoying they quit Mac. I've sent them multiple reports and worked with them on improvements over the year, but no more band aiding.

Ugh! I had so many issues with Revu 2.1 on my Mac (before Big Sur) with bugs and crashes and wasted time. I work with subdivision maps and am still utterly convinced that using paper (for what I do) is much faster and more efficient. I don't have the option to switch to different markup software. But I'll say again that since I bought a Windows PC (just for this!) and installed the Windows version of Revu, it's like night and day. The software is much more robust and functional, more stable, and I'm getting work done much faster. Might pay for itself in...well a few years. 😜 I just read your other post about their "online version" and will tell you that their Support mentioned something about this to me a couple of years ago, so don't hold your breath. If it comes out, I'll certainly try it though.

If you are looking for an alternative to Bluebeam, our application PDF Studio, which is an advanced PDF editor, with quite a few tools for architects and engineers:

  • PDF Annotations and Markups
  • PDF Measurement Tools
  • PDF Stamping
  • Grid and Rulers
  • Pan and Zoom
  • Loupe Tool
  • Overlay PDF Comparison
  • Side by Side PDF Comparison
  • Tool Chest
  • Assembling and Splitting
  • Digital Signatures and Seals
  • Assign Comments to Layers
  • Batch Processing

A user license for the Pro version costs $129 and allows to install on 2 machines.

I emailed Bluebeam regarding lack of Mac support and their response was the quickest I ever received (came from sales I presume). Anyway, they said they are working on an online version. Sounds great but I don't want to wait for them to issue and then fix with 5 updates. That seems to be the trend with me and Bluebeam. I held off buying 2018 and the later versions of it since 2019 was supposed to be so much better. I definitely had to wait. So I still want to be done waiting and looking for an alternative. Because I can wish/wait in one hand and "move to trash" in other hand, or something like that. So far Stack seems to be best for Mac but researching more.

Hey, I've enjoyed reading your story! I've been working with computers since 1981 and went Mac in 2011. I've had no real major problems with either of my iMacs or other devices until this week but that's for another thread. Even though I wasn't happy to have to buy an expensive Windows PC to run Revu, it runs so well it seems like it's worth it. I had loved not dealing with Windows but I got sucked back in. I promise to post here if/when I hear from Bluebeam that they have an online version of Revu! 😀

I converted my Outlook Express email database to Mac Mail in 2011 when I went Mac and have had no problems.

I use Parallels on my MBP to run legacy software in Win XP, it runs perfectly. I haven't had that kind of luck with Revu and Parallels but I know others have.

If you wish to never boot Bluebeam on your Mac , then upgrade......unfortunately! Very unfortunate that we become victims of these companies inability to conform to some basic collaboration. While i understand software and coding and hindering supporting of older software causes (slower progress), basic rules should be in place for users (ones that perpetuate financial stability for these big firms) to not get cornered with scenario such as main bout "Bluebeam vs. BigSur" where both are winners and losers are we!!!!!

Thanks for that info. I got introduced to Revu when I was still working. The engineering firm I worked for used it extensively as well as every architect firm we dealt with. So, really got used to it and appreciate its features, even the less than robust version that worked on Mac. Good to hear it is working for you.

You are welcome. IMHO version 2 was a big improvement over 1.9 and I'd still be using it if it worked on Big Sur. However, when I tried a trial version of Extreme for Windows, I was impressed with how much more stable it was, how many more features it has, and how it allows me to work more quickly and efficiently than Revu 2.0 for Mac and especially 1.9. "Less than robust" is a very apt description.

So anyway, my opinion is that you are safe to upgrade to Big Sur. Someone else in this thread is the one who suggested using Revu 1.9 for Mac on Big Sur - it's not just me. If that helps. 😀 I still hope a future Big Sur update allows Revu version 2 to work on my Mac. I've also suggested to Bluebeam that they reconsider supporting the Mac version.
