Connecting old Apple Cinema Display to new Mac Mini (M1)

I'm thinking about getting one of the new Mac Mini computers. I was thinking about using my existing display with it, but am unsure if it will be supported. I believe the older models do support it with an adapter. Unfortunately they had USB-C ports and this one has USB-4 ports. I don't know if USB-C and USB-4 are interchangeable here. Anyone know? If they have a better adapter choice, I'm open to suggestions. I'm assuming the USB 2.0 connector will work with the USB A port (display uses USB 2 and mini DisplayPort).

Hardware I wish to connect to (2020 M1 mode):

I just bought the new Mac Mini with the M1 chip and wanted to connect an old 20" Cinema Display (A1080). So I called Apple Support and got a great tech that said to use a USB Type C (Thunderbolt 3) to DVI Adapter. I bought the Benfei USB 3.1 (USB-C) to DVI-D Adapter on Amazon. It works! Here's a run down of the connections:

1) Cinema Display DVI connects to the Benfei which connects to the Thunderbolt/USB4 port on the Mini

2) Cinema Display USB connects to the USB-A on the Mini

3) Cinema Display Mini Display Port (MDP) is left unconnected to anything

So I learned two things from the Apple tech: the Thunderbolt/USB4 port on the new Mac Mini M1 accepts USB-C and the MDP does not have to connect to anything.

Has anyone attempted to connect an A1407 (27” Thunderbolt Display) via thunderbolt 3 -> thunderbolt 2 adapter and an A1316 (27” Mini DisplayPort Cinema Display via HDMI -> Mini DisplayPort to an M1 Mac Mini with any success? If so, can you link to the adapters you used? Im thinking this may be the way to get “matching” dual 27” screens attached to the M1 Mac Mini.

Hello, trying to connect my MMM1 to my 30" Apple CinemaDisplay for two weeks. I have now bought three adapters: 1) deleyCON (HDMI-DVI), 2) CableCreation (USB C - DVI) and 3) StarTech (USB C - DVI). With all connections I get a maximum resolution of 1280x800 px, despite advertisements touting the full resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels (100 ppi). What is going wrong here? If anyone can help, please feel free to say.

It should also be noted that I currently have no access to my data, which are all on Drobo storages and only accessible via Thunderbolt. Drobo - so they say - is working on the problem.

Best regards

Otto

Hi, Thank you for your answer!

1) 20" ACD - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Cinema_Display / trying to connect directly with: A) HDMI-DVI B) USB4-DVI Result: Only max. 1280x800px; needed: full resolution at the 30"ACD 2560×1600 Pixeln (100 ppi

2) at this time with my old 13" MacBookPro 2015 with an adapter: DVI (30"ACD) Thunderbolt 2 + USB: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204149 It works very fine and accurate!

My question: why isn't it possible to get a direct connection between the newest MMM1 and my old 30"ACD?

Thank you for your answer!

As I described it in my last comment: I bought 3 Tools:

So is there a missing tool between all those connectors, which brings the full resolution?

This is great! Thank you so much for sharing the links to the adapters?

I have two Thunderbolt displays and know that's not possible but one TB and one Cinema Display seem to be the trick. Do you have the USB output from the Cinema display connected?

Would you be willing to share pictures of the connecters from both monitors to the mini so I can see what goes where? I'd love to have two monitors that look the same and this seems to be the only way to do it without buying two new identical monitors.

I agree, this problem is not solved.

I have two 23 inch Apple Cinema displays. Around 80% of the time they work well, wake up from sleep with no problem.

Around 20% of the time my left hand display, connected by a StarTec USB-C adaptor stays black. I then have to reach under my desk and dis-connect, and then re-connect the USB-C lead, and then it all works.

Interestingly when this happens all of the desktop icons on both displays show on the right hand display, all on top of each other. The other curious thing is that if I go on and use Safari under these circumstances it displays line numbers for all the pull down bookmarks! Safari does not do this normally.

To the untrained eye this looks like a software problem, so I hope Apple are paying attention and working on it or I will get backache from grovelling under my desk.

Definitely not solved. My old Cinema Display is the original 30" model, which was almost impossible to use. A bunch of the problems were solved by using my old MacBook Pro with the Ruby script to generate an EDID for the monitor (DisplayProductID-9232). Please, please, please Apple, add the correct EDID for all of your old monitors in your next update!

But that is not the only problem - sometimes the monitor is not recognized and it takes one or more power down reboots to get it to be recognized. And then sometimes it is recognized but has double vision, or it hiccups, going black every thirty seconds or so for a second or two. I've been a Mac user since the beginning, and this is the worst unresolved problem I've ever had. Macs are supposed to just work, and always have in the past. How did the miserable multiple monitor support get past your quality control?
