It appears there's no longer a delete shortcut key in the Messages app for Big Sur.
Is there a way to set one up?
There's also no 'X' at the end of selected message to delete.
The functionality now is to right click on the message and select delete.
Perfect, I added it and used the exact name in the Messages app.
1) Add the shortcut via the Keyboard/Shortcuts tab
2) Select App Shortcut
3) Use the drop down to find the Messages app
4) Click on the + option while selecting on All Applications
5) Type in the exact name of the menu you wish to setup up a shortcut for (e.g., Delete Conversation...)
6) Pick the shortcut keys and done
7) Check the Messages app and now there is a shortcut key for deleting a converstion
OK, so I have created the shortcut as described.
But you still have to battle the pop-up dialog to confirm. You can't just hit enter. Like you can when shutting down.
Nor can you use Tab to move between button, so is there a way to do this, without having to grab the mouse anyway???
This is really helpful ... if I could figure out how to make it work. Can you provide more detailed instructions? I have checked the preferences on the Messages app (on my MBA) and on my iPhone, but everything seems like it should be working like you said (delete on one, it deletes on others). Thanks!
How do you ensure this is on? I have tried a few different ways, but it all seems like it should be working now. I do have a MBA on Big Sur, iPhone 11 on the latest iOS and an older iMac on High Sierra. If I need to log out of the iMac to make this work, that would be fine.
I went to the category list of shortcuts. There is no delete short cut. There's just Show Help Menu
I have no idea what you are trying to do. My reply, above, was how to create a shortcut, not how to delete one. The only ones you can delete are the ones you make in the App Shortcuts category. You'd just select the shortcut and click the – button.
I'm sorry, you were quite right, I'm trying to find a shortcut that will allow me to delete messages. I thought that was the thread I was on. Can you then take me from the point where I am in the App Shortcuts menu, and tell me how to create a "Delete" shortcut? I would be most grateful
So I tried the lame-o suggestion with the shortcut key. Really useless - when the action is greyed out in the message menus.
The "X" was perfect and was not an issue If i am specifically placing my mouse on the "X" i am intentionally looking to delete. why do I need to confirm delete. history of messages is always there. Simply if it was not broken, then why fix it what is not broken. Feels like a a bigger mouse trap.
The swipe is not even acceptable, But this is HIGH FRICTION - which goes against all of Apples principles.
Lastly a major point, apparently the designer and even the developer may be out of touch with Fitts's Law
Viola - Formula for Complete Disaster. I preferred the Old Apple Low Friction, form and design.
Why would Apple remove the 'x' key to delete Messages on the Mac? Makes no sense! The previous functionality works so well, why complicate matters by adding an extra keystroke or two?
I downgraded back to Catalina to get this functionality back. I will stay with Catalina.

Very kludgy workaround. Just bring back the "X", and swipe left ONCE, not twice ... good grief!

This not having a short cut to delete messages from messenger is going to be problem on the MacBook Pro, air, and the iMac. Please apple team fix this..
If it is so horrible to not have one, why don’t you make one yourself?
