Big Sur - will not boot with Thunderbolt monitor connected

I have a MacBook Pro 15" mid-2014

with Nvidia GeForce GT750

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur.

Install appeared to succeed.

However, the computer hangs at initial boot up whenever I connect my external Apple Thunderbolt Monitor.

System will boot without the Thunderbolt monitor and then successfully connect to Thunderbolt at boot up.

Unfortunately, this keeps my MBP from using the Thunderbolt monitor with my Win 10 Bootcamp since Windows will not recognize the monitor unless connected at initial boot up.

I have reset SMC to no effect.

Rolled back to Catalina thru TimeMachine backup to no effect.

Performed clean install of Big Sur by external USB which succeeds but does not fix boot with Thunderbolt issue.

Any ideas on a cure?

Thanks.

ALL SORTED...

I spent hours on the phone with Apple Ireland about this issue last week and they remotely took over my Macbook Pro and did loads of unfathomable tech stuff as I watched, including taking time-stamps of actions they did, as they occurred in real time.

They rang me to let me know that they were about to release macOS Big Sur 11.1 and that the engineers had inserted some coding to hopefully sort my/your issue.

They rang again tonight and asked me to download, install and restart to test it, and they waited while the install occurred etc.

And it works.... Macbook now happily reboots with Thunderbolt monitor attached, etc

Happy Christmas one and all.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Big Sur.

MacBook Pro Late 2013.

Reinstalled my CCC Catalina image but will not boot. Goes into startup-sound loop.

Had the hardware checked-out and everything is fine.

After Apple logo appears I can attach the Thunderbolt display and it boots fine and everything seems ok. Just will not boot when attached.

Any fix would have to address the firmware issue in CATALINA now as I have no intent to update to Big Sur anytime soon.

Andy, I think it might be easier for me bang my head on the keyboard than to get you to understand me. I had NO issue with connecting my 2016 MPB to my thunderbolt screen in the first place after upgrading to Big Sur - apart from the issue that many had which was I had to disconnect the screen to power up laptop then plug screen back in.

The issues I have left, which I thought I had successfully articulated before, but obviously not well enough, are that my camera and speakers do not work on Thunderbolt screen. The USB hubs are intermittent depending on what peri I have plugged in, for example printer works, Iphone connection does not..this firmware update does not fix that (it did not have that fix in release notes!)

So why are you posting in the thread titled "Big Sur - will not boot with Thunderbolt monitor connected" then?

You should be banging your head in a "Thunderbolt camera and speakers dont work in Big Sur" thread.

That way you won't be confusing people with your "it does not fix the issue" comments because your issue is NOT what this thread is about.................you might get some responses then that help with your specific problem.

yup I hope so - by the way there are peeps on https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252038098?answerId=254078643022&page=3 talking about the same issue as this thread so I give up, and hope in the fullness of time there is a firmware fix for my issues. luckily in the current climate I don't need to use my big screen with camera/video conferencing very much..!

At Startup my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) does not recognise my bluetooth (keyboard & mouse) while the external hard disks (TB & USB) are attached, this AFTER updating to BigSur, yes I have done all the "resets" and eventually did a reinstall of BigSur (the problem still persists). If I do a startup WITHOUT the external hard disks (TB & USB) attached, the bluetooth keyboard and mouse are instantlly recognised and then I have to attach all the HDs... Not an elegant solution!

MBP 2016 user. The only major issue I am left with is the camera on my thunderbolt screen. It does not work on Big Sur, and if I try to activate it with FaceTime it takes out my thunderbolt USB ports then I have to restart. My workaround is to have a USB camera now popped on top of my thunderbolt screen. I also removed my USB dock as it was causing the MBP to crash a few times a day, when I removed it MBP more stable.
