iPhone 12 camera flicker on video recording

Hi!

I recently bought the new iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have noticed that when I shoot video's in the dark (with the lights on in the house), there is some kind of flickering visible in the video.

Apparently it is possible that due to very fast flickering of lights, slowmo video's make this kind of flickering visible when you can not see it with the naked eye.

I however have this problem with normal video's as well. I have compared it with the video's on my iPhone X and it is definitely worse in my iPhone 12 video's.

I noticed that this happens while recording video on HD (or 4K) at 60 FPS, if you switch to 30 FPS this doesn't happen.

Anyone else that has this problem?

Thanks!

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

As for the issue of light flickering, studying a little this whole issue I have been able to verify one thing.

This only happens to people who live in countries with PAL format (like Spain), where artificial light works with FPS multiples of 25. In many other places like the US it does not happen because they work with FPS multiples of 30.

I have downloaded the RCam app, which allows you to vary the FPS and I have been able to verify that in video recording with 30FPS and 60FPS this flickering of the light occurs when recording video, which does not happen if I set the recording to 25FPS or 50FPS.

I know Apple is going to introduce 25FPS recording and would ask if they can introduce 50FPS in the future for better and smoother recordings.

Setting the camera's FPS to 25FPS or 50FPS eliminates this problem. so... PROBLEM SOLVED!

I don't think it's a problem with electical network because thar flicker problem is not present on the iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max. It's true that just happens when recording 4K or HD at 60 FPS.

I saw this happens on iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max so it should be a software problem.

Hope Apple see this post and fixes soon

Muchas gracias y mucha suerte!!

There's a video on YouTube that demonstrates this issue very well in normal shooting conditions. The guy's just walking around outside.

He definitely has HDR turned on based on the overall look of the video, but as previous tests show the flickering effect is unrelated to that setting. And by flickering I mean different parts of the image going brighter and darker in a very annoying manner as the camera moves.

I hope all users who have this problem report it to Apple, so they could come up with a fix soon.

100% the software. Easy test for anyone out there to see how the dynamic tone mapping is working, find a laser pointer and video record it. On walls, it can instantly change the color tonality of the wall, I found this out playing with my cats.

Another way I’ve seen the threshold in action is to be in a fairly dim room and focus on a door that has a light source. Face the camera towards something in the dimly lit room, Lock the exposure and focus by doing a long press. Move towards the door, you will notice the illuminated doorway will get brighter, but as you pan away, it gets dark again. There should be no adjustments first of all if I lock something, and secondly, it works opposite of what you’d want, I’d need more light in the darker room, not less.

Another weird issue I have seen is when recording in a dim room with 240 FPS, the video records fine, but on the screen it sort of ‘flashes’, it will be at normal brightness, get really dim over 5 seconds and then back to normal brightness and repeat.

So many weird issues with this phone.

I also think is 100% software issue but I've tried newer versions of iOS, above iOS 14.3 and bugs haven't been solved...

  • All iPhone 12 models camera flicker on video recording bug is still not been fixed
  • Green tint on screen has still not been fixed
  • Stutter issue has still not been fixed
  • Screen flicker between 10% and 90% brightness has still not been fixed
  • Camera sensor light bug when recording video has still not been fixed

Hope Apple solves this soon cause this bugs are present since November 2020... 3 months...

Same issue here. But it’s interesting that I have this problem only in two rooms in the house while the lights are on. If I shoot video (4K 60 fps) in the dining room, the video flickers. If I do this in the bedroom, it doesn’t.

Is it possible that it has to do with the electrical network? Because the video otherwise looks good. In 30 fps there’s no problem.
