Deleted emails not appearing in bin - MacOS Big Sur

Hi

Since upgrading to MacOS Big Sur, deleted emails no not appear in the bin.

I have 2 mail accounts in Apple Mail. Prior to upgrading to Big Sur, deleted emails went into the bin.

Since upgrading, deleted emails seem to disappear.

There are a few emails in the bin, however they were deleted before upgrading to Big Sur.

I checked Mail Preferences > Account Behaviours and both mailboxes are set to move deleted items to the bin. But they don't.

How do I fix this - is it a known problem?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

We got the following advice from an Apple Support online chat and it worked for us. In Mail go to Favourites at the top of the sidebar, click the + sign in the circle and you should get a new window that says "Add Favourite". Use the drop down menu to add "All Bins" or "All Trash" (it may vary according to region). Click OK and this should solve the problem. All past and future deleted e-mails should now appear in this new folder.

Pleased that helped. I'm familiar with creating smart folders in Outlook (for Windows) although I don't use them much.

It's a similar method in Apple Mail, although it's really a workaround to a problem that shouldn't exist, as you indicated ;)

As you say, hopefully there will be a fix which doesn't involve people messing with system folders.

Keep us posted if you sort this, ideally with a simple solution!

I've no idea what I did, just now - but have now managed to delete everything since 1350 hrs today.

The search method no longer finds them, either!

I can go into "account info" and see them on the pop server, but wouldn't know how to get them re-sent, anyway.

This almost feels like travelling backwards, at times!

I'm giving up for the night, now - as I suspect I'll do more harm than good (if I haven't already!) poking around where I don't belong, so I'll sleep on it for now!

Being awake enough to remember what I'd just done would have been so handy, though!

Thanking you again, for your help, Mr Doe!

Thank you!

I am convinced that I had looked in that menu previously.

I thought the deleted emails were stored locally before (that is, on my Mac). But now, they're showing against the mail folders.

Normally if I delete emails from my Mac, they are not deleted from my pop account (eg viewing through webmail).

That said, if I had found that solution earlier, I wouldn't have caught up with the smart folder functionality in Apple Mail. So, that's a plus!

Not sure why Apple decided to not show all bins as standard. I've found people always want to go back to deleted items, perhaps because they were deleted in error - or deleted prematurely ;)

Edit -

To add that I have taken several actions, including a mailbox rebuild and safe boot to try to fix.

So, maybe the menu items were not there before and have since appeared. That's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it!

Ha! Yes it works!

I might try to delete some of the extra bins that seem to have appeared since the update - just to clear things up, and make things look normal again - possibly doing a (long, drawn-out) back-up in between.

I had the laptop suddenly shut down, with a warning message, a couple of hours ago.

When it had re-booted, ther was the option to send a report to Apple.

I'm feeling quite relieved, now - and had assumed that this was another manifestation of the Mail problem, as I'd been "messing around" in mail, only a couple of minutes beforehand, in an attempt to get things back to "normal"!

I may yet stick this on that other thread that I linked to on here, a couple of days ago - but I'll be sure to make sure they know it wasn't actually me that found it!

You both appear to have a decent, solid methodolgy behind your solving solutions - and in contrast, I generally poke around hoping for the best!

How I suddenly have lots of "points" against my "level 1" status here, I'll never know!

Consolation for seeming so challenged & backward in my cartoon-style diagnostic procedures, or raising the most laughs at Apple Central, is all I can think of!

I know it's minor in the grand scheme of things - but it feels like a Eureka moment, to me - so, a heart-felt thanks - to both of you!

I can barely remember what changes I've made, now - but I did end up deleting 2 or 3 extra bins, that I think had only appeared since the update!

The one at the top called "All Bins" seems to hold everything it should - and the contents of the newer "Smart Mailbox" called "Temp Bin" that I set up, using info earlier in this thread - seems to hold the same info, too.

It feels as if I've now got two bins running parallel, just in case one of them vanishes - as seemed to happen in the first place!

Not much help at all - I know!

Re the search. Mine stopped working yesterday and wouldn't work even after restarting MacBook.

I tried a mailbox rebuild in Apple Mail. And search is working now - and fast.

I noticed a delay a couple of times where no or only a few search results appeared. I think Mail might have still been indexing emails.

It's now back to instantaneous (or near instantaneous) and I have a lot of emails in my mailboxes.

That was getting on my nerves a bit, too!

And I really wanted it all back to how it always was - with just the one bin to deal with.

All I've done since then, is delete one of them, and the others are still fine.

I think I also deleted a couple of greyed-out sub-bins, that had appeared within the original bin!

Now there are still two - the original & the "Smart Mailbox" bin that I had to create, just to see my deleted items - both with an equal number of deleted items.

But do I take that final gamble?

I keep hovering over the new "smart" bin, just about to delete it, but haven't so far, just in case it puts me right back to square one, all over again!

Maybe I should do a back-up, and give it a go!

If I get to do that, I'll report back here with the results - good or bad!

But probably not today - as I'm flat out for a while, now!

Maybe Apple will see all of this, and get Mail (or at least the Bins) back to normal?

I'm still hoping!

All the Best,

LB

Yeah, Tony

I tried that earlier, hoping that the smart folder trick might work!

No luck so far!

At the moment, I hunt them down using the search, and then put them into a newly created folder, each time I send anything!

It just seemed odd that they can vanish the way they seem to, at all!

Thanks for helping, though!

I'll keep at it, whenever there's time. (and inclination!)

All the Best,

LB

Hi LB

I was not saying to use the smart folders option. My solution was:

First up make sure the Favourites Bar is visible.

To the right of "Favourites" press the + icon. In the "Add Favourite" dialog box use arrow icon and select the folder/s you want. In my case, being in Australia, I selected both "All Rubbish" - deleted emails and "All Junk" - junk emails. When you do this they appear under favourites. If you have more than 1 account like I do they appear as sub folders.

PS Other members are saying to select "All Bins" - maybe this is USA?

So now I have All Inboxes, All Sent, All Junk, All Rubbish & All Drafts with sub folders.

Have you tried this?

Regards Tony
